Government Ends Festive Toll Exemptions, Introduces Targeted Subsidy Approach

Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi stated that the cabinet’s decision aligns with the government’s broader plan to implement targeted subsidies. “According to the cabinet decision, there will be no more free tolls. This also applies to the upcoming Chinese New Year next week,” he said during the opening of Section 2 of the West Coast Expressway (WCE), as reported by NST.

Nanta confirmed that 2024 was the final year for toll-free travel during festive periods. He added that any future considerations would be announced as needed.

Targeted Subsidy Strategy

The new approach reflects the government’s commitment to realigning subsidies to benefit specific groups of Malaysians. Further details on the targeted subsidy framework will be unveiled soon.

Monsoon Preparedness Measures

In addressing concerns about the monsoon surge, Nanta revealed that the Works Ministry has identified over 1,000 high-risk slope locations across the country. The ministry is actively monitoring these areas to mitigate potential risks and ensure public safety.

This policy shift underscores the government’s focus on sustainability and equitable resource allocation while balancing public needs and fiscal responsibility.
