Lexus has officially unveiled the new IS, which made its world premiere on September 9 and is set to hit showrooms in early 2026 across various markets. This marks the next chapter for a model that has defined the compact FR sports sedan segment for over 25 years.
First introduced in 1999, the IS was built around one idea – driving enjoyment. Across three generations, it has earned a reputation for sharp handling, bold styling, and the unmistakable “Lexus Driving Signature.” With more than 1.3 million units sold in 40 countries since launch, it remains one of the brand’s most important nameplates, and Lexus is making sure the new model stays true to its roots while adding plenty of fresh touches.
The 2026 IS will be available in two variants: the IS 300h and IS 350. Development centred on the theme of “refinement in performance and design,” which essentially means Lexus wanted to sharpen its handling while keeping the design aggressive and sporty.
The engineers fine-tuned the steering with a new rack-parallel electric power steering system paired with a variable gear ratio, allowing for crisper turn-in and less wheel movement through tight corners. A linear-solenoid Adaptive Variable Suspension (AVS) has also been fitted, helping the car strike a balance between stability and comfort by soaking up road imperfections more effectively.
Visually, the IS has been given a bolder front end that emphasises its low centre of gravity and wide stance. The F SPORT variant builds on this with a newly designed rear spoiler to improve aerodynamics and fresh 19-inch lightweight alloys that add to its sharp character.
Red brake callipers with the Lexus logo are also available as a factory option. Customers will have eight body colours to choose from, including a brand-new shade called Neutrino Grey. The metallic finish gives the IS a dynamic look that reflects its athletic personality.
Step inside and the cabin has been reworked with a stronger focus on the driver. A new 12.3-inch centre touchscreen now sits higher for better visibility, while the digital instrument cluster has also been upgraded to a 12.3-inch full LCD panel. Together, these displays deliver clear, intuitive information and align with the driver’s natural line of sight.
Adding to the premium atmosphere is a new “Forged Bamboo” trim across the console and start switch bezel, which creates a striking shading effect. There’s also a new interior colour option called “Prominence,” inspired by solar flares, that gives the cabin a fiery, performance-driven edge.
Of course, no Lexus update would be complete without improvements to safety and driver assistance. The latest Lexus Safety System+ has been enhanced with expanded functionality, while the brand’s Advanced Drive system, also known as Lexus Teammate, makes its debut in the IS.
This semi-autonomous technology is designed for highway use, even allowing hands-free operation in traffic jams, easing the stress of long-distance travel.
Although the company has not released official specifications, the engine lineup is expected to remain unchanged. This would mean the IS300 retains its 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder, while the IS300h continues with its 2.5-litre hybrid powertrain.
The new IS is more than just a facelift – it’s Lexus doubling down on what has made the model a favourite among driving enthusiasts for decades. By blending sharper dynamics with a more aggressive design and a fully modernised cabin, the 2026 IS looks set to carry the legacy of the compact Lexus sports sedan well into the future.
