A New Direction for Collectable-Inspired Commissions

The Black Badge Ghost Gamer is the first Rolls-Royce commission to take direct inspiration from arcade gaming. Interest in early video-game memorabilia has risen sharply in recent years, not just as an investment space but also as a cultural archive for collectors who grew up with 1970s and 1980s arcade machines and consoles. Rolls-Royce notes that several of its clients are deeply involved in this area, making a commission tied to retro gaming both timely and relevant.

The design team approached the Ghost Gamer with the intention of recreating the look and feel of 8-bit aesthetics through contemporary craftsmanship. Large, visible elements sit alongside smaller, concealed details that only reveal themselves with closer inspection, giving the car a layered, interactive character.

Exterior: Arcade Imagery in a Two-Tone Finish

The Ghost Gamer wears a two-tone exterior combining Salamanca Blue for the main body and Crystal over Diamond Black for the upper sections. The combination mimics the metallic sheen and bold neon accents of classic arcade cabinets. Central to the design is the ‘Cheeky Alien’ motif developed with the commissioning client. The alien appears as a hand-painted Coachline graphic, created using 89 miniature squares that reflect the pixel-based graphics of early games. One side pairs the design with a pink explosion graphic; the other uses yellow and blue.

Additional exterior elements continue the theme, including an Illuminated Pantheon Grille and black brake callipers paired with 22-inch seven-spoke forged Black Badge wheels.

Interior: A Playful, Tactile Tribute to Early Digital Culture

Inside, the Black and Casden Tan cabin brings the arcade theme fully to life. The seats are embroidered with ‘Player 1’ and ‘Player 2’ at the front and ‘Player 3’ and ‘Player 4’ at the rear, all set in an 8-bit-style font. Each headrest carries a block-colour ‘Cheeky Alien’ made up of 89 embroidered ‘pixels’. The stitching colours mimic the shifting tones and flicker of old arcade screens.

A standout element is the Waterfall between the rear seats, finished in Black Badge Technical Fibre. It features a hand-painted lunar scene with two inlaid stainless-steel flying-saucer motifs. This artwork, inspired by early arcade cabinet graphics, required two weeks of development and several rounds of paint testing. Black and Mandarin paint were used to build depth and contrast, applied through a mix of brushwork, sponge texturing and airbrushed blending. A fine silver sparkle added to the lacquer enhances the cosmic effect.

Hidden references are scattered throughout the cabin. The rear picnic table includes a metal inlay of the ‘Cheeky Alien’, and the base of the front air vent features a concealed 8-bit engraving visible only when the vent is lifted.

Illumination Reimagined: From ‘Laser Base’ to ‘Pixel Blaster’

For this commission, Rolls-Royce reinterprets its signature lighting features. The Illuminated Fascia, originally introduced on the Ghost, is redesigned to resemble the minimalist ‘Laser Base’ backgrounds common in early arcade games. It includes a gunship graphic made from 85 individual stars, arranged to create the impression of movement through space.

Above, the ‘Pixel Blaster’ Starlight Headliner brings 80 pixel-shaped spacecraft to life using hand-placed fibre-optic lights. Rolls-Royce has also reprogrammed the Shooting Star function so that the lights mimic laser fire streaking across the headliner, heightening the sense of retro-themed spectacle.

Illuminated Treadplates complete the experience, displaying phrases such as ‘PRESS START’, ‘LOADING’, ‘LEVEL UP’ and ‘INSERT COIN’ in 8-bit lettering.

A Commission Tailored to a New Generation of Collectors

Created for a tech entrepreneur, the Black Badge Ghost Gamer illustrates how Rolls-Royce continues to adapt its Bespoke offering to the interests and cultural references of younger collectors. With its blend of nostalgia, craftsmanship and playful detail, the commission reflects the growing influence of digital culture and early gaming aesthetics within the luxury world.
