Johor Premium Outlets (JPO), yang menempatkan hub pengecasan pantas kenderaan elektrik (EV) terbesar di Asia Tenggara, telah mengumumkan bahawa kemudahan pengecasannya kini beroperasi 24 jam sehari.

Tahun lalu, JPO mengumumkan rancangan untuk membina sehingga 500 pengecas EV dan pengecas pantas 1MW pertama di Asia Tenggara yang boleh diakses secara awam. Setakat ini, zon pengecasan khas tersebut mempunyai 50 pengecas, membolehkan akses lancar untuk pengguna EV sepanjang masa.

Penambahbaikan ini direka untuk menyokong komuniti pemandu EV yang semakin berkembang, yang memerlukan pengecasan yang boleh dipercayai dan mudah diakses di luar waktu operasi standard peruncitan. Selain itu, ia memperkukuh komitmen jangka panjang JPO terhadap kelestarian dan infrastruktur sedia masa hadapan.

Di samping pembangunan infrastruktur, JPO terus memperkasakan inisiatif kelestariannya menerusi perkhidmatan ekosistem yang lebih luas seperti perkhidmatan bas ulang-alik EV dan akses penyewaan kereta EV.

Kawasan pengecasan tersebut direka dengan mengambil kira faktor keselamatan dan keselesaan. Premis ini disokong oleh kakitangan keselamatan di lokasi, pemantauan CCTV, serta pencahayaan yang terang bagi menjamin keterlihatan dan keselamatan. Johor Premium Outlets (JPO), home to southeast Asia’s largest fast-charging electric vehicle (EV) hub, has announced that its charging facilities will now operate 24 hours.

Last year, JPO announced plans to build up to 500 EV chargers and Southeast Asia’s first publicly accessible 1MW fast charger. As of now, the dedicated charging zone has 50 chargers, enabling seamless access for EV users around the clock.

This enhancement is designed to better support the growing community of EV drivers who require reliable and accessible charging beyond the standard retail hours. Additionally, it strengthens JPO’s long-term commitment to sustainability and future-ready infrastructure.

Beyond infrastructure, Johor Premium Outlets continues to reinforce its sustainability initiatives through broader ecosystem services such as EV shuttle services and EV car rental accessibility.

The charging area has been designed with both safety and convenience in mind. The premises are supported by on-ground security personnel, CCTV monitoring and well-lit surroundings to ensure visibility and safety. Additional amenities include restroom facilities and vending machines that are accessible 24 hours a day.

“With up to 1MW of charging capacity and a comprehensive mix of charging options, our hub is purpose-built to serve a broad spectrum of EVs, from earlier-generation models to next-generation high-capacity platforms , delivering efficient, future-ready charging at scale,” said Jean Marie Pin Harry, President and Chief Operating Officer of Genting Simon Sdn Bhd.

TNG Digital Sdn Bhd, the company behind Malaysia’s leading digital financial platform, TNG eWallet, has rolled out a new EV Charging feature that allows electric vehicle owners to find, activate, and pay for charging across multiple networks in Malaysia and Singapore — all within a single app.

This new feature is powered by Voltality, a wholly owned subsidiary of Beep, which connects users to various charge point operators (CPOs) without the need to download multiple apps. Payments are made directly through TNG eWallet, with automatic deductions and instant refunds for any unused balance, ensuring a smooth and transparent charging experience from start to finish.

According to TNG Digital Chief Executive Officer Alan Ni, the new function was designed to simplify the EV ownership experience by eliminating the need for different apps and accounts. The goal, he said, was to unify the entire charging process under one convenient platform.

The rollout begins with key operator partners such as KINETA, EVlution, Zura Charge, CHARGE+, RExharge, Powered By RISE, and JusEV Charging Network, along with major Singaporean operators like SP Mobility, CDG ENGIE, EV Mobility, and MNL Asia. More partners are expected to join soon, further expanding coverage and convenience for users across the region.

At launch, TNG eWallet users will have access to over 6,000 charging points spread across more than 1,700 locations in Malaysia and Singapore, marking a major milestone in the country’s growing EV ecosystem.

The addition of the EV Charging feature also supports the Malaysian government’s Low Carbon Mobility Blueprint (LCMB) 2021–2030, which aims to establish 10,000 EV charging stations nationwide by 2025. As of September 2025, more than 4,100 chargers have already been installed, reflecting the rapid development of the country’s charging infrastructure.

TNG Digital has long been a key player in accelerating Malaysia’s EV ecosystem. The company previously collaborated with DC Handal to make TNG eWallet the first platform in the country to support contactless EV charging payments via QR code. With this new upgrade, users can now locate, activate, and pay for charging directly within the same app — a complete step forward toward a seamless digital mobility experience.

How to Use the EV Charging Feature in TNG eWallet

1. Open the TNG eWallet app
   Launch the app on your smartphone and ensure you’re logged in to your account.

2. Tap the ‘EV Charging’ icon
   On the home screen, look for the EV Charging icon and tap to open the charging interface.

3. Find a charging station
   Browse nearby locations using the interactive map or list view. You can filter by location, charger type, or availability.

4. Select your preferred charger
   Choose a charger from the list or scan the QR code directly on the charging unit.

5. Plug in your vehicle
   Connect the charging cable securely to your EV’s charging port.

6. Start charging
   Tap ‘Next’ in the app to begin the charging session. The app will display real-time charging progress, duration, and estimated cost.

7. Stop charging when ready
   When you’re done, swipe ‘Slide to Stop Charging’ in the app to end the session safely.

Instead of relying purely on technology, the research highlighted how subtle behavioural nudges can change the way people interact with their vehicles. In the U.S., plug-in hybrid (PHEV) drivers increased their charging frequency by around 10% thanks to targeted interventions.

Meanwhile, in Japan, both PHEV and battery electric vehicle (BEV) users shifted a significant portion of their charging to hours with the highest renewable energy supply — nearly 59% more than before — which translated to about 30 minutes of extra daytime charging per vehicle each day.

Beyond the environmental benefits, the experiments also improved driver satisfaction. In the U.S., PHEV owners reported a 16-point increase in satisfaction levels, with every participant ending up fully satisfied with their vehicles.

The underlying message from TRI is clear: reducing emissions is not only about engineering more advanced vehicles but also about guiding people towards smarter usage. Electrified cars, whether hybrids or fully electric, deliver their greatest environmental benefit when charged frequently and at the right times of day. Without changes in behaviour, their full potential to cut carbon cannot be realised.

TRI sees behavioural science as a powerful and scalable way to complement infrastructure and financial incentives. Unlike the costly and time-consuming process of building public charging networks or rolling out subsidies, behaviour-focused interventions can be rolled out quickly and at minimal expense, while still producing measurable results.

The ChargeMinder app puts this concept into practice. It combines a series of subtle but effective tools such as timely reminders, progress streaks, positive reinforcement, and short interactive quizzes, that make learning about charging behaviour more engaging.

Laboratory tests found that personalised reminders were up to 50% more effective than generic notifications. Importantly, the platform has been designed to protect privacy, with the ability to securely handle data from vehicle telematics and charging locations while tailoring interventions to individual users.

TRI is already planning the next stage of development. Working closely with Toyota’s Carbon Neutral Centre, the team intends to push ChargeMinder towards even more personalised, data-driven interventions, ensuring that the behavioural element remains central to Toyota’s global carbon neutrality strategy.

For Toyota, this marks another step in bridging the gap between human behaviour and technological progress. The company believes that technologies built with people’s habits in mind will be just as important as hardware advances in the shift towards cleaner mobility.

In 2024, BMW Group Malaysia successfully introduced four new EV charging facilities in Putrajaya in partnership with Gentari and DC Handal. Additionally, two new charging stations have been established in Kuala Lumpur through collaborations with ChargeEV and ChargeSini.

If there is one thing that is true about the EV charging infrastructure in Malaysia, it is that it is not expanding quickly enough. 

But helping to quicken the process is Electron, Tenaga Nasional Berhad’s division whose sole purpose is to identify locations and set up chargers. 

The newest location is at the BHPetrol station in Jalan Genting Klang 1. 

Operational since January of 2025, the new station joins two other high-capacity chargers set up at a BHPetrol station by Electron, the other two being the BHP Karak – KL highway and the BHP R&R Ladang Bikam stop over in Perak. 

All chargers at the above three locations offer a 200kW DC charging capacity with dual charging CCS2 points. If both points are operational at the same time, the output drops to 100kW, but if you get lucky and you are the only one charging, then you get the full 200kW. 

Electron says that the new charging station that it set up at the BHPetrol Jalan Genting Klang 1 is forecasted to serve 1,200 mph of charge in five years. 

This is an impressive number and could potentially reduce 460 metric tons of CO2E in as many years. That is equivalent to planting 7,808 trees or 474 acres of forests or 585 football fields of forests in just five years.

“There are about 38,000 EVs on Malaysian roads today, but this number doesn’t yet warrant placing charging stations nationwide,” said Lim. He emphasised the ongoing collaboration with regulators to accelerate the rollout of EV infrastructure.

A Unified Asean Strategy

Lim underscored the importance of a cohesive Asean strategy to strengthen the region’s EV industry. He argued that relying on assembly-focused models limits the potential for value creation, advocating instead for investment in high-value sectors such as semiconductors, battery technology, and software engineering.

“We need to move beyond assembly, which creates lower-paying jobs, and focus on areas that add significant value,” Lim said. He noted that Malaysia’s semiconductor industry already plays a critical role in the EV ecosystem and could serve as a foundation for further growth.

Drawing lessons from China’s success in building a robust supply chain for EVs, Lim suggested that Asean countries should adopt a holistic approach by dividing focus areas among member nations rather than competing against one another. “Fragmented policies will hinder Asean’s ability to compete globally,” he added.

Building Domestic Demand and Consumer Confidence

Lim stressed the need to strengthen domestic demand for EVs across Asean to attract investment and nurture a comprehensive regional EV ecosystem. He cited Taiwan’s support for battery-swapping stations and after-sales services, such as EV maintenance shops, as a model for building consumer confidence.

“This kind of ecosystem is essential to encourage EV adoption. Asean must replicate such initiatives to boost customer confidence and attract investment in the EV sector,” he said.

Malaysia’s Goals and Regional Opportunities

Malaysia aims to install 10,000 public EV chargers by 2025, signalling a commitment to supporting EV adoption. However, Lim advised that Asean countries focus on advanced industries such as software engineering for driver assistance systems and renewable energy technologies to remain competitive globally.

“Asean must invest in high-value industries to build a sustainable and competitive EV sector,” Lim concluded.

While progress is being made, Lim’s remarks highlight the challenges of scaling EV infrastructure and the importance of cohesive regional strategies to foster long-term growth in the EV industry.

The Malaysian government continues to support the growth of electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure, offering various incentives despite the absence of specific provisions in the 2025 Budget.

Key Incentives for Charging Site Operators (CPOs)

The Ministry of Investment, Trade, and Industry (MITI) highlighted several incentives available to encourage the development of EV charging stations:

• Green Investment Tax Allowance (GITA):
  • CPOs meeting the eligibility criteria can benefit from a 100% Investment Tax Allowance for five years.
  • This allowance allows deductions of up to 100% of statutory income annually.
  • Companies producing EV charging equipment are granted full income tax exemptions on statutory income from 2023 to 2032.

  EV Growth Projections

  • By 2030, the government anticipates at least 400,000 electrified vehicles on Malaysian roads, spanning passenger and commercial vehicles.
  • As of September 30, 2024, the total sales volume of electrified vehicles (including hybrids, plug-in hybrids, battery electric vehicles, and fuel cell electric vehicles) stood at 33,319 units.
  • The estimated total for 2023 was 35,723 units, accounting for 4.12% of all vehicle sales.

  Private Sector Investments in EV Charging Infrastructure

  MITI reported significant investments by major companies to support EV charging bay (EVCB) expansion:

  • Gentari (a Petronas subsidiary) and Tenaga Nasional Bhd (TNB) are committed to spending approximately RM76 million by June 2024.
  • These investments, combined with efforts from 30 other active CPO companies, aim to build more EVCBs across Malaysia, increasing accessibility for EV users.

  Furthermore, Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul mentioned the rapid growth of the EV market in Malaysia, with nearly 11,000 battery electric vehicles (BEV) and hybrids sold until March 2024.

  During the National Electric Vehicle Steering Committee (NEVSC) meeting chaired by Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof, discussions were held regarding the concept of an EV Battery Passport. Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul emphasised the importance of equipping all EV batteries with an identification system to ensure the detection and recycling of end-of-life batteries in alignment with the circular economy concept.
