<p><span>When the Nissan Leaf was launched in Malaysia, it carried a price tag of around RM 188k. Today, early units can be found for as low as RM 35,000. That alone tells you how much the EV landscape has changed.</span></p>
<p><span>On paper, it is dated, especially the pre-facelift model. A non-liquid-cooled 40 kWh battery, CHAdeMO DC charging capped at 50 kW, Type 1 AC charging port, and no Apple CarPlay or Android Auto. By today’s standards, that all sounds limiting. But if you can get past that, the Leaf starts to make a lot of sense.</span></p>

<p><span>It is simple, comfortable, and drives in a way that feels natural to anyone coming from an ICE car. The damping is surprisingly good, the controls are intuitive, and there is essentially no learning curve. You just get in and go.</span></p>
<p><span>This is perhaps the purest example of an EV as a transportation device. It does not try to impress you, it does not overwhelm you with features, and it does not ask you to change how you use a car (except maybe figure out the adapters/cables to use with current chargers).</span></p>
<p><span>At this price point, it is also one of the cheapest ways to experience EV ownership in Malaysia. And for some, that is enough.</span></p>

<p><span>This is the car that arguably brought EVs into the mainstream conversation in Malaysia when it was launched at around RM 150k. Today, with used units hovering around RM 55,000, that value proposition becomes even harder to ignore.</span></p>

<p><span>It is not without its quirks. The interior is filled with design elements that can feel a little gimmicky, including the now-famous rotating screen, which BYD has since moved away from in newer models. It is the complete opposite of the Leaf’s stripped-back approach.</span></p>
<p><span>But beyond that, it delivers where it matters. A larger battery, longer range, and a more modern overall package make it a far more complete EV for daily use. You may not love everything about it, but it is difficult to argue against what it offers at this price.</span></p>

<p><span>When new, the Hyundai Ioniq 5 and Kia EV6 sat in the RM 200,000 to RM 300,000 range. Today, early units can be found from around RM 130,000, and they still feel like contemporary cars.</span></p>
<p><span>Both are built on Hyundai Motor Group’s E-GMP platform, featuring 800V architecture, which allows for significantly faster charging compared to most EVs on the market at the time. This was one of the first major steps forward in making EV ownership more convenient.</span></p>

<p><span>What stands out most is how well they balance futuristic elements with usability. Unlike many newer cars that rely heavily on touch controls, both models retain enough physical buttons to make daily use straightforward and intuitive.</span></p>

<p><span>The design will not be for everyone, and its size can feel a little overwhelming in tighter urban environments, but as a complete package, it is difficult to fault.</span></p>

<p><span>You may have noticed that Tesla, the poster child for EVs, is absent from this list, and that largely comes down to value. Used Model 3 units remain around RM 120k for earlier examples, with Model Y prices sitting higher still, often as grey imports. With brand new, officially supported Model 3 units now starting from approximately RM 147k, the case for buying used becomes less compelling.</span></p>
<p><span>In any case, there are still question marks around long-term ownership, particularly when it comes to battery replacement costs and maintenance over time. That is something we have not explored in detail here.</span></p>
<p><span>For now, this is simply a quick survey of what the used EV market looks like today, based largely on what these cars felt like when they were new. If this is something you are seriously considering, it is definitely worth digging deeper.</span></p>

<p><span>The XRT is the highlight of the lineup, featuring dual-motor all-wheel drive and a suspension lift of 0.9 inches. This boost improves not only ground clearance but also approach (19.8 degrees) and departure angles (30 degrees). While it’s not built for extreme off-roading, the XRT’s 18-inch wheels with all-terrain tyres enhance its ability on dirt roads. Aesthetic changes include black plastic bumpers with a pixelated camouflage pattern, black trim and badging, and bright red recovery hooks. The interior follows suit with an all-black colour scheme, leatherette seats, and rubber floor mats designed to hide scuffs and scrapes from rough terrain.</span></p>

<p><span>Beyond the XRT, the 2025 Ioniq 5 lineup introduces larger battery packs across the range. The SE Standard Range battery jumps from 58 kWh to 63 kWh, and the rest of the lineup now features an 84-kWh pack, up from 77.4 kWh. As a result, range estimates increase: the SE Standard Range sees a boost from 354km to over 386km, while long-range rear-wheel-drive models now offer over 498km compared to the previous 487km. All-wheel-drive variants will offer between 402 and 450km, depending on trim, with the XRT expected to sit on the lower end due to its higher ride height.</span></p>

<p><span>The 2025 Ioniq 5 also gets refreshed bumpers, wheels, and rear spoilers, alongside new tech upgrades, including wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, blind-spot warning, and parking sensors. Notably, a rear window wiper now comes standard, addressing a common complaint among Ioniq 5 owners. Inside, the steering wheel has been redesigned, climate control buttons are touch-sensitive, and physical controls for seat climate have been added. Hyundai has also reinforced the doors and B-pillars for enhanced side impact protection.</span></p>

<p>The Ioniq 5 N eN1 Cup car underwent significant modifications to meet the demands of professional racing. Its front end features a new design with a larger lip and prominent dive planes, while new over-fenders enhance its aerodynamics. A massive rear wing adds to the car&#8217;s racing aesthetic and downforce capabilities.</p>

<p>To reduce weight, Hyundai made several adjustments. The Cup car sheds weight by replacing heavy components with lighter alternatives. This includes swapping the bulky 21-inch wheels for lightweight 18-inch forged wheels fitted with motorsport slicks. Glass windows are replaced with lighter polycarbonate versions, and the hood is replaced with a fibreglass-reinforced plastic one. This allowed the weight to drop from 2222kg to 1973kg.</p>

<p>Inside, the interior is stripped down to essentials, with unnecessary features removed. The car retains only a single bucket seat for the driver, along with an FIA-compliant roll cage and fire extinguishers for safety.</p>

<p>Despite the weight reduction, the powertrain remains unchanged. The dual motors deliver the same 641hp as the road car, drawing power from the standard 84.0 kWh battery. The car retains the rapid charging capability of the standard model, allowing for a charge from 10-80 per cent in just 18 minutes.</p>

<p>The eN1 Cup car incorporates adjustable suspension with two-way dampers and a high-voltage shutoff for enhanced performance and safety. Hyundai also introduces the e-Shift programming from the Ioniq 5 N, adding a unique element to the driving experience with simulated torque interruptions during gear changes.</p>
