A tip of the hat is due towards Chery Malaysia as it celebrates a remarkable milestone, surpassing 30,000 units sold in less than three years since it entered the local market.

It recorded 30,073 cumulative vehicle sales as of the end of 2025 to prop itself as one of Malaysia’s fastest-growing automotive brands.

The rapid rise was foreshadowed during its first six months of 2023, selling 4,501 vehicles between June and December of that year. The milestone was eclipsed with a solid wrap up of 2025, notching 12,930 units delivered.

Chery Malaysia followed the global cue cars by initially launching with internal combustion engine (ICE) models like the Omoda 5 and Tiggo Pro 8 before introducing electrified models such as the Omoda E5 in March 2024. The Omoda 5 proved to be its best-performing model and established the marque’s foothold here.

Building on the Tiggo range followed with the Tiggo 7 Pro, Tiggo Cross Turbo and the Tiggo Cross Hybrid before the brand ventured into the PHEV segment with the Tiggo 7 PHEV and Tiggo 8 PHEV.

The Tiggo range grew to include something for every motorist, from ICE models to HEV and PHEV variants, the latter powered by the cutting-edge Chery Super Hybrid (CSH) technology. Its six dynamic variants are proving to be a major contributor for the brand here.

Chery also went the extra mile with impactful community initiatives to bolster trust. Chief amongst this was during the unfortunate fire incident in Putra Heights where the company loaned Chery vehicles to 50 affected homeowners within the very same week to ensure residents could move their belongings, travel for daily needs and manage temporary relocation. Further support for the community came in the form of funding for the National Sports Trust Fund (KWASN), in collaboration with the Ministry of Youth and Sports.

Growing its local network remained a key effort in cementing the brand’s presence here. A step towards that was by bridging the gap between education and employment for skilled workers. Chery Malaysia collaborated with the Belia Mahir Project to place graduates into the workforce with employment opportunities within the company.

The new year will see Chery continue development of the Chery Smart Auto Industrial Park in Lembah Beringin, Selangor. The RM2.2 billion facility spanning over 200-acres will enhance localisation, expand production capacity and create economic opportunities once its first phase is completed in the first half of the year.

Globally, Chery Group sold 2.806 million vehicles in 2025, a 7.8% year-on-year increase to maintain its position as China’s top automotive exporter with 1.344 million units shipped.

What happened?

The incident occurred when the back axle of the Omoda 5 snapped clean off while the car was in motion. The driver reported no significant road hazards or collisions that could have led to such a failure. The suddenness of the incident posed a serious safety risk to the occupants of the car, although fortunately, it transpired at a lower speed during a turn, averting potential catastrophic consequences.

What caused it?

The primary focus of the investigation is to determine the root cause of the back axle failure. Initial observations indicate a potential structural weakness in the axle assembly, possibly exacerbated by inadequate welding points. The presence of rust around the weld points suggests a possible corrosion issue, leading to compromised integrity and eventual failure of the axle.

Chery Auto Malaysia has released a statement and has taken proactive measures to address the situation and reassure affected customers. The affected car has been towed to the service centre for a comprehensive inspection and investigation. Additionally, Chery Auto Malaysia is reaching out to other potentially affected customers to encourage them to schedule inspections at their nearest service centres. The company is committed to transparency and has established a dedicated Customer Careline to address any concerns or inquiries from customers.

The back axle failure incident involving the Omoda 5 vehicle has raised significant concerns about the safety and reliability of Chery vehicles. A thorough investigation is underway to identify the root cause of the failure and implement corrective measures to prevent similar incidents in the future. In addition to the internal investigation, the car was sent to Puspakom for an impartial assessment. At Puspakom, a thorough 10-point inspection, including a brake test, was conducted to evaluate various aspects such as efficiency, dynamic imbalance, run-out, residual force, and parking brake performance, ensuring optimal braking capability.

Reports state that all inspections carried out by both Chery Auto Malaysia’s team and Puspakom have yielded no adverse findings. The results confirm that the car is indeed safe, and the brake system meets satisfactory standards, as indicated in the Puspakom test result. The customer has been duly informed of these results, and the team has provided her with a comprehensive report detailing the findings of all inspections conducted.
