Fuel prices are raging. There is no other way to say it. While the government is putting in considerable effort to maintain the price of Ron95 at RM1.99, I will not be surprised if it becomes unfeasible if the war in Iran does not end soon.

And to announce a hike in the price of Ron95 during the Raya season will be the political equivalent of performing hara-kiri. So, the government must continue with the subsidies for the considerably future.

The price of Ron97 and diesel has already skyrocketed, but that is a story for another day.

Anyway, so how does one manage during these difficult times?

I am no finance expert, but the easiest way would be to tighten one’s belt. Spend less on the unnecessary stuff, use public transport where possible and just try to live modestly.

But if you are in the market for a new car and have been caught off by the war in Iran, perhaps now might be a good time to consider something more frugal rather than what the heart desires.

An electric car makes the most sense right now. At just under RM60,000, I would recommend the Proton e.MAS 5 for anyone who is considering adopting the EV lifestyle.

But if you don’t have a home charger and your routine is unpredictable, perhaps an EV may not be for you.

Enter the plug-in hybrid (PHEV), a powertrain that is now being touted by some manufacturers as a more practical solution than pure EV’s.

Proton for one says a PHEV is ideal for those who are curious about EV’s but are not yet ready to take the leap into full electric powertrains.

That could be true. But I also think a PHEV is ideal for those of us whose routines are irregular and involve travelling interstate more often than occasionally.

So, to plug the gap for those who want something more frugal than an internal combustion engine yet don’t want an EV, Proton introduced the e.MAS 7 PHEV.

If you have always been tempted by the good looks and spacious interior of the all-electric e.MAS 7, you should read on.

What is the e.MAS 7 PHEV?

The simplest way to make it easy for none car people to understand, this is an electric car with a petrol-powered engine. Absolute blasphemy of a description for car guys, I know, but stay with me.

A regular hybrid system has two different power sources; the first is an electric motor with a battery to power it and the second is a petrol-powered engine (or diesel in some cases). The system switches automatically between the two depending on engine load and driving demands.

A normal hybrid system such as the one found in a Honda CRV e:HEV (hybrid) has a small battery with limited electric range. But this is usually more efficient than your regular non-hybrid cars.

But a PHEV takes it a step further.

A car with a plug-in hybrid powertrain typically has a more powerful electric motor that gets its juice from a large capacity battery. Then there is an internal combustion engine that acts as a generator to charge the battery while also powering the car at higher speeds where a petrol engine is more efficient than an electric motor, such as at highway speeds.

The PHEV powertrain can also self-charge, relying on the engine to recharge as well as the regenerative brakes.

But this usually only takes it up to 80% or so. Some car makers like Proton recommend recharging the car by plugging it into a charger at least once a week rather than relying on self-charging all the time.

It also has a better all-electric range that usually varies from 80km to 140km depending on the size of the battery.

So, the Proton e.MAS 7 PHEV is everything described above, and more.

Diving deeper into the e.MAS 7 PHEV.

Available in three variants, each is distinguished by its interior specifications as well as the size of the battery powering it.

But powering all three of them is a 1.5-litre, naturally-aspirated, four-cylinder engine that shares the same family lineage as the engine powering the new Proton Saga.

The difference here is that the engine in the e.MAS 7 PHEV runs on an Atkinson Cycle with single Variable Valve Timing. That’s not all, more intricate differences include the removal of an auxiliary belt, replacement of the timing belt with a timing chain and others that all aid in improving thermal efficiency.

Just in case you are wondering, thermal efficiency is important because it shows how efficiently an engine can convert the energy from fuel combustion into actually moving the car. The better the thermal efficiency, the more efficient the car because there is less wastage through heat.

The e.MAS 7 PHEV has a thermal efficiency rating of 46.5%, which is considered to be one of the best in the segment. Regular thermal efficiency ratings vary from 42% to 45%.

By itself, the engine produces 99PS and 125Nm of torque. There is no gearbox here, power is sent directly to the wheels through the electric motor.

The motor, placed at the front axle, produces 218PS and 262Nm of torque by itself. Combined, the entire powertrain (referred to in the industry as total system output) produces 262PS and 262Nm of torque.

As for the battery, the entry level and mid-spec models, known as Prime and Premium, run on an 18.4kWh LFP battery sourced from CATL.

This gives the car an all-electric range of 83km and a combined range of 943km.

As for charging, you can recharge the battery using a 30kW DC charger which will take you 20 minutes to charge from 30% to 80%, or a 6.6kW AC charger.

The flagship Premium Plus on the other hand uses a bigger, 29.8kWh Geely Aegies short blade battery. At 146km, the Premium Plus boasts nearly twice the range of its siblings, and it accepts 60kW of DC charging.

But, because of the bigger capacity of the battery, charging time stands at 16 minutes to get from 30% to 80%.

Combined range for the Premium Plus variant stands at 996km.

What about the interior of the car?

Those who own the fully-electric e.MAS 7 will find the interior of the PHEV to be a familiar place. Both models share a similar cabin and that is a good thing because it feels spacious, well put together and more importantly, very comfortable.

There is no leather trimming here, instead you get leatherette but that is fine as the seats feel well cushioned with ample thigh support. The latter is something that even the popular X70 misses out on.

From the driver’s seat, the oblong shaped steering wheel is retained and once you get used to it, feels natural in your hands.

Right behind the wheel lays a 10.2-inch LCD instrument cluster and to the left of that is a 15.4-inch infotainment system with 2.5k resolution.

You get wireless Carplay and Android Auto from the get-go now, so there’s no waiting for annoying over the air updates.

Audiophiles will appreciate the 16-speaker Flyme sound system that includes speakers embedded into the headrests so that you can answer calls more clearly.

One of the key differences here is the under-seat storage that was available in the electric powered e.MAS 7. This is no longer there because the space has been taken up by the 51-litre fuel tank.

But besides that, the interior is a fantastic place to be in either as a driver or a passenger. Long or short distance journeys are never a problem, this is a car designed for all lifestyles, which takes us to:

How does it drive?

To showcase its abilities, Pro-Net, the company in charge of electric and hybrid Protons, organised a drive to Langkawi.

Driving that far was ideal to show off every aspect of the e.MAS 7 PHEV.

On the highway, the car could easily reach its top speed of 170km/h. The system simply will not let it pass that as much as we tried.

What’s most important here though is that the interior refinement was impressive at all speeds. This is possibly down to a combination of Goodyear tyres as well as good sound insulation.

Tyres make a big difference here because the e.MAS 7 PHEV is heavier than the electric variant. A heavier car needs more robust tyres and that usually means more noise since tyre compound needs to be harder too. So, what the e.MAS 7 PHEV has achieved here in terms of refinement levels is nothing short of exemplary.

Power delivery is great too. You don’t get explosive acceleration as what you would experience with an EV, but with an eight second zero to 100km/h time, it is not exactly a slouch either.

But what was impressive though was the fuel efficiency figures. Keep in mind that we were not exactly light footed, we had a ferry to catch to Langkawi at 3pm from Kuala Kedah and left the Proton Centre of Excellence in Shah Alam at about 9am. So, you can imagine what ensued.

Despite travelling at speeds that cannot be mentioned here, we saw a fuel consumption figure of 7.1-litres/100km. That is not far off the official figures of 4.3-litres/100km which Proton claims. Our kind of driving still gives the e.MAS 7 PHEV a theoretical range of 718km on a full tank, that by itself is worthy of praise and we can be sure that no one is going to be cruising all day at speeds that could get your license confiscated.

And interestingly, the Proton X70 that served as the last car of the convoy, had to refuel once on the way to get to the ferry terminal. We only refuelled once during the entire trip.

As for battery charge, we tried to force charge the car as we drove and got it up to about 45%. You should know that the harder you drive, the quicker the battery dissipates.

There is an option to force charge the battery but that means the engine will drive the wheels and charge the battery at the same time, which means that it will probably consumer more fuel.

The good thing here is that you don’t need to do that, you can simply plug it into a charger at your earliest convenience.

Suspension feel on the other hand can be a little soft. It is great at lower speed where it absorbs everything and keeps the occupants clueless about the state of the road underneath the car.

But at higher speed, something a little firmer would have been nice as body roll becomes increasingly noticeable.

So, should you buy one?

On a personal level, I feel the e.MAS 7 PHEV has it all – good looks, a great interior and more importantly, incredible efficiency.

If there is a concern about reliability, it is worth keeping in mind that the Proton e.MAS 7 PHEV exists in many other markets as the Geely Galaxy Starship. This means that there is plenty of learnings that has trickled down and helped improve the product.

The Proton e.MAS 7 PHEV is still relatively new in the local market, so there is not enough data to tell us how it is going to be like in the long term. But it already exists in other markets and there has been no major incidents, and that should give you peace of mind already.

So, if efficiency is something you want then the Proton e.MAS 7 PHEV should be up there in your list. And with prices ranging from RM109,800 to RM129,800, it is among the most affordable plug-in hybrids in the market.

Melalui perjalanan harian mereka pada tahun 2025, seramai 9,549 pemilik Proton e.MAS memainkan peranan aktif dalam mengurangkan pencemaran udara dan bunyi di kawasan bandar, menjadikan penggunaan kenderaan elektrik sebagai manfaat kelestarian yang jelas dan praktikal.

Ini satu langkah besar, kerana Mauritius menjadi negara antarabangsa keempat yang menerima kereta elektrik (EV) pertama Proton.

Ia dilancarkan di Malaysia baru kira-kira sepuluh bulan lalu, dan baru-baru ini membantu Proton kembali ke pasaran Singapura. Ternyata e.MAS 7 memang laku keras. Ia kini adalah model eksport Proton yang ketiga paling popular, selepas Saga dan X50.

Melancarkan e.MAS 7 di negara baharu menunjukkan Proton serius untuk berkembang di peringkat antarabangsa dan memimpin dalam segmen Kenderaan Tenaga Baharu (NEV). Dari segi kuasa, ia boleh memecut dari 0 ke 100 km/j dalam hanya 7.1 saat. Unit pacuan elektriknya berkuasa dengan 215hp dan tork 320 Nm.

Ia menggunakan sel bateri AEGIS Short Blade, dan bateri 60.22 kWhnya memberikan jarak perjalanan 410 km (mengikut WLTP).

Big news from Proton International Corporation (PICSB)! They’ve officially rolled out the Proton e.MAS 7 in Mauritius.

This is kind of a big deal, as it makes Mauritius the fourth international spot to get Proton’s very first electric vehicle (EV). It’s only been about ten months since the car first launched in Malaysia, and it just recently helped Proton get back into the Singapore market, too. Clearly, the e.MAS 7 is already a hit—it’s now Proton’s third best-selling export model, right behind the classic Saga and the popular X50.

A Big Step for Proton’s EV Plan:
Launching the e.MAS 7 in new countries is a huge move for Proton. It really shows they’re serious about growing internationally and leading the charge in New Energy Vehicles (NEVs). PROTON is quickly becoming a major EV player in the region, and the demand proves it! They’ve delivered over 6,500 units both at home and abroad since the car debuted.

This whole expansion plan is powered by Proton’s smart investments in electrification. They built a brand-new EV plant in Malaysia that can pump out up to 45,000 EVs a year. That facility is key to Proton’s goal of hitting 250,000 export units over the next few years and helping the world move toward sustainable driving.

It can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in just 7.1 seconds. The electric drive unit packs a punch with 214hp of power and 320 Nm of torque.

It runs on advanced AEGIS Short Blade battery cells, and its 60.22 kWh battery gives you a WLTP-rated range of 410 km.

To make going electric worry-free, PROTON is offering a comprehensive warranty of 6 years or 150,000 km for the car, and an 8-year or 160,000 km warranty for the high-voltage battery and components.

If you are wondering why the Proton e.MAS 7 is much more expensive in Mauritius than in Malaysia, well that is because of the heavy taxation and excise duties that the government imposes on imported cars, something like what they Malaysian government does. Up to 100% in certain cases. On top of that, there is also a further 15% value added tax imposed.

Pada Sabtu, 20 September lalu, pengguna Lebuhraya East Klang Valley Expressway (EKVE) dikejutkan dengan satu pemandangan luar biasa — Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad, kini berusia 100 tahun, dilihat memandu sendiri Proton e.MAS 7, SUV elektrik terbaharu keluaran Proton.

Walaupun telah mencecah usia seabad, beliau kelihatan tenang dan yakin mengendalikan kenderaan itu. Ramai pemandu yang terserempak segera mengangkat tangan memberi hormat, tanda penghargaan rakyat terhadap bekas Perdana Menteri yang masih aktif dan bertenaga.

Ikatan Tun Mahathir dan Proton

Hubungan Mahathir dengan Proton bukan sesuatu yang baharu. Sejak tahun 1980-an, beliau telah mencetuskan idea untuk menubuhkan projek kereta nasional sebagai sebahagian daripada visi pembangunan industri negara. Proton secara rasmi ditubuhkan pada 1983, manakala Proton Saga pertama dilancarkan pada 1985.

Bahagian dalaman menampilkan paparan pemandu digital 10.2 inci dan skrin infotainmen besar 15.4 inci dengan sistem Flyme Auto. Varian Premium turut dilengkapi sistem audio 16 pembesar suara. Proton menetapkan harga bermula dari RM105,800 (Prime) dan RM119,800 (Premium). Setiap pembelian hadir dengan jaminan 6 tahun tanpa had perbatuan, selain jaminan bateri 8 tahun/160,000 km. The e.MAS 7 itself has quickly become the best-selling electric vehicle in Malaysia. Available in two variants, Prime and Premium, both are powered by a front-mounted motor producing 218PS and 320Nm of torque.

The Prime does the 0–100km/h sprint in 6.9 seconds, the Premium in 7.1 seconds, with top speeds limited to 175km/h. Battery options differ, with the Prime carrying a 49.52 kWh pack good for 345km of WLTP range, while the Premium gets a larger 60.22 kWh unit that stretches range to 410km.

Fast charging is efficient, with both models capable of reaching 80% in approximately 20 minutes on DC. AC charging up to 11 kW is also supported. Recent updates have added wireless Apple CarPlay, improvements to the pedestrian warning sound system, and new colours, including Obsidian Black. Limited-run Alabaster White interiors are also available with Quartz Rose and Turquoise Green paint options.

Inside, the e.MAS 7 continues Proton’s push into the digital age, with a 10.2-inch driver display and a massive 15.4-inch infotainment screen running Flyme Auto. The Premium variant takes it further with a 16-speaker Flyme Sound setup. Safety and convenience are addressed with Level 2 semi-autonomous driving features as standard.

Priced at RM105,800 for the Prime and RM119,800 for the Premium (on-the-road, excluding insurance), the e.MAS 7 also comes with generous warranty coverage, six years with unlimited mileage for the car itself, and eight years or 160,000 km for the EV battery. Buyers can also opt for Proton’s “Power Pack+” package, which bundles in a home charger, V2L adaptor, unlimited data, and trade-in rebates.

For many Malaysians, seeing Tun Mahathir in the driver’s seat of the e.MAS 7 felt like a full-circle moment. The man who brought Proton into existence in the 1980s is now embracing the brand’s electric future. At 100 years old, he remains as sharp and active as ever, and Proton, too, is proving that it can stay relevant in a fast-changing automotive world.

Proton has launched its first electric vehicle, the e.MAS 7, in Singapore, making the brand’s third overseas market for its debut EV. The event also signalled Proton’s return to the city-state after an absence of more than a decade.

The launch brought together senior representatives from Proton and its distributor VINCAR Group, including Proton CEO Dr Li Chunrong, VINCAR CEO Vincent Tan, Proton International Corporation CEO Edmund Lim Meng Thong, PRO-NET CEO Zhang Qiang, and Proton Deputy CEO Ainol Azmil bin Abu Bakar. Officials from the Malaysian High Commission, members of the Singapore media, and VINCAR customers were also present.

The e.MAS 7 has already shown strong results in Malaysia. Nearly 6,000 units were delivered in the first eight months of 2025, giving Proton a 24 per cent share of the EV market and making it the nation’s best-selling electric vehicle. Despite having only one EV in its line-up, Proton has established itself as a competitive force in a crowded segment.

The SUV has been well-received for its combination of design, performance, safety, comfort, and advanced features. With an ASEAN NCAP safety score of 92.57 points, the highest in its category, it provides assurance for customers who are new to electric vehicles. The extensive network of Proton 3S and 4S outlets in Malaysia has also given owners a strong sense of confidence in after-sales support.

For Singapore, the e.MAS 7 will be sold in two versions, Prime and Premium, with a choice of six exterior colours: Platinum Silver, Lithium White, Turquoise Green, Slate Grey, Quartz Rose, and Obsidian Black. Interior finishes include Indigo Blue and Alabaster White, offering customers a degree of customisation. To mark the debut, Proton has introduced a Founders Edition package limited to the first 99 buyers.

It includes a 10-year unlimited mileage battery warranty, five years of complimentary cross-border data roaming, and roadside assistance available in both Singapore and Malaysia. This arrangement ensures that Singaporean owners facing issues in Malaysia can have their vehicles towed to a Proton service centre across the border.

Pricing has been set at SGD175,988 (around RM576,380) for the Prime and SGD179,988 (around RM589,481) for the Premium, inclusive of COE. These launch prices are exclusive to the first 99 units, making the early allocation particularly attractive. Proton International Corporation CEO Edmund Lim Meng Thong confirmed that the e.MAS 7 is only the beginning for Singapore, with additional new energy models to follow in the future.

Proton New Energy Technology Sdn Bhd (PRO-NET), anak syarikat Proton, mengumumkan bahawa Proton e.MAS 7 sekali lagi mengekalkan kedudukannya sebagai kenderaan elektrik No. 1 di Malaysia bagi bulan Ogos 2025.

Jumlah penghantaran telah mencecah sebanyak 5,811 unit dari 1 Januari hingga 31 Ogos, merangkumi 5,455 unit jualan tempatan dan 356 unit dieksport ke 4 pasaran antarabangsa.

Dengan pencapaian ini, Proton e.MAS 7 kini telah menjadi kenderaan elektrik paling laris di Malaysia selama lapan bulan berturut-turut, mengekalkan kedudukannya sebagai peneraju pasaran sejak awal tahun.

Berdasarkan data pendaftaran terkini JPJ, model ini terus menguasai pasaran sehingga separuh kedua tahun 2025, dengan 5,455 unit didaftarkan pada bulan Ogos dan jumlah keseluruhan setakat ini mencecah 5,811 unit.

Dengan pegangan pasaran sebanyak 24%, hampir satu daripada setiap empat EV yang terjual di Malaysia ialah Proton e.MAS 7.

Pada bulan Ogos 2025 yang lepas telah menandakan satu pencapaian penting dengan perasmian rasmi kilang EV pertama Proton di Tanjung Malim. Sejak diperkenalkan, Proton e.MAS 7 telah dipasarkan sebagai model CBU (completely built-up) dari China bagi memenuhi permintaan awal.

Dengan kemudahan baharu yang sudahpun mula beroperasi, Proton e.MAS 7 akan beralih kepada pemasangan tempatan (CKD) dalam masa terdekat, sekali gus mencatat sejarah sebagai kenderaan elektrik pertama Proton yang dipasang di Malaysia.

Kilang baharu yang terletak di dalam Automotive High Technology Valley (AHTV) ini mempunyai kapasiti sebanyak 20,000 kenderaan setahun, dengan keupayaan untuk ditingkatkan sehingga 45,000 unit apabila permintaan meningkat.

Pemasangan tempatan ini akan memperkukuh peranan PRO-NET dalam membangunkan ekosistem EV Malaysia dengan meningkatkan aksesibiliti, mewujudkan peluang pekerjaan, serta menggalakkan penglibatan lebih besar daripada vendor tempatan dalam rantaian bekalan.

Langkah ini turut mencerminkan aspirasi Kerajaan untuk menjadikan Tanjung Malim sebagai hab EV Malaysia. Perdana Menteri Malaysia, Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim menyeru pengeluaran EV Proton pada harga berdaya saing menjelang Sidang Kemuncak ASEAN pada Oktober 2025.

This milestone means the e.MAS 7 has been the country’s best-selling EV for eight consecutive months, maintaining its lead since the start of the year. Based on JPJ registration data, the car holds a 24% market share, meaning almost one in every four EVs sold in Malaysia is a Proton e.MAS 7.

Local Assembly Begins in Tanjung Malim

August also marked a significant step forward for Proton with the official opening of its first dedicated EV plant in Tanjung Malim. Up until now, the e.MAS 7 had been brought in as a completely built-up (CBU) model from China to keep up with strong early demand. With the new facility now operational, Proton will soon begin local assembly of the model, making the e.MAS 7 the brand’s first CKD EV.

The plant, located within the Automotive High Technology Valley (AHTV), starts with an annual production capacity of 20,000 units, but Proton says this can be scaled up to 45,000 vehicles if demand continues to grow. Local assembly not only boosts production capacity but also strengthens Malaysia’s EV ecosystem by creating skilled jobs, involving more local vendors in the supply chain, and making EV ownership more accessible to Malaysians.

This development also ties into the government’s broader vision of positioning Tanjung Malim as the country’s EV hub. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has already called for the rollout of an affordable Proton EV ahead of the ASEAN Summit in October 2025, underlining the national push towards wider EV adoption.

With its sales momentum, customer loyalty, and the backing of local assembly, the Proton e.MAS 7 looks set to continue leading Malaysia’s electric revolution well into the future.
