The VIOS Challenge, entering its eighth season, has been a mainstay of local grassroots racing and will adopt a revised one-hour endurance format for this international appearance, doubling its usual 30-minute sprint duration. The race will unfold on the full 5.543-kilometre Sepang circuit and is open to three classes of competitors: the Super Sporting category for professional racers, the Sporting class for amateurs, and the Rookie class comprising young drivers from Toyota’s developmental ranks.

Five rookies from the Toyota GAZOO Racing Young Talent Development Programme, launched in 2021, will represent the next generation of Malaysian racing prospects. Since its inception, the programme has produced 22 graduates, with over 10 active in local competitions and four already making their mark internationally with wins and championship titles.

The VIOS Challenge continues to grow in stature, offering RM800,000 in prize money and featuring a competitive field of 36 drivers from Malaysia, Singapore, and Thailand. All participants race in identical Toyota VIOS vehicles, each powered by a 1.5-litre engine paired with a 5-speed transmission—creating a level playing field where driver skill takes centre stage. Races are often characterised by close battles and dramatic finishes, cementing the championship’s reputation as one of the most thrilling in Southeast Asia.

The Malaysian round of the SUPER GT Series is the only international stop on the 2025 calendar, which otherwise remains focused on Japan. Toyota has been a dominant force in the GT500 class, with TGR Team au TOM’s clinching back-to-back championships in 2023 and 2024. The 2025 season has also started strong, with the TOM’s GR Supra and KeePer CERUMO GR Supra securing victories in the opening rounds at Okayama and Fuji Speedway respectively.

Visitors to the SUPER GT Malaysia Festival will also be treated to an expansive Toyota GAZOO Racing showcase at the Sepang Circuit’s Mall and Grandstand area. The display will feature a full lineup of GR performance vehicles—including the GR Supra, GR Yaris, GR Corolla, GR86, Corolla GR Sport, and Corolla Cross HEV GR Sport—as well as exclusive GR merchandise, interactive games, and prize giveaways. Sime Darby Auto Performance, representing Porsche in Malaysia, underscored the event’s significance by reaffirming its long-standing support for motorsport talent and culture. The company’s Chief Executive Officer, Christopher Hunter, highlighted that the Carrera Cup Asia is not merely a competitive series but a celebration of motorsport’s enduring spirit, adding that the brand remains committed to nurturing both real-world and virtual racers throughout the region.

Among the highlights of the Sepang weekend was the return of the endurance race format, adding strategic depth and stamina to the otherwise sprint-focused series. Malaysian driver Nazim Azman and British talent Hugo Ellis, who claimed third in the Porsche Carrera Cup Great Britain, spearheaded Sime Motors Racing’s campaign in cars #17 and #38, respectively. While high-octane action took place on track, the digital racing scene mirrored the adrenaline as the Porsche Esports Sprint Challenge Malaysia 2025 reached its thrilling finale. Divided into Junior Dreamers, Young Dreamers, and Driven Dreamers categories, the top ten contenders in each group battled it out on a virtual replica of the Sepang circuit. The esports series stays true to the Carrera Cup Asia format, using identical Porsche 911 GT3 Cup (992) race cars, demonstrating the increasingly competitive nature of sim racing as a parallel discipline within motorsports.

As a centrepiece to the motorsport celebration, fans were treated to a rare public showcase of the Porsche 963 LMDh race car replica. This striking prototype, developed for elite endurance racing events such as the 24 Hours of Le Mans, Daytona, and Sebring, draws on the legacy of Porsche’s celebrated 956 and 962 models. The 963’s core is a 4.6-litre twin-turbocharged V8 engine, rooted in the Porsche 918 Spyder and further developed from the RS Spyder’s endurance pedigree.

A sophisticated hybrid system, developed in collaboration with Bosch and Williams Advanced Engineering, supplements the petrol engine to deliver a formidable combined output of 670hp, peaking at 10,000 RPM. Engineered within a lightweight 2,200-pound frame, the 963 features a pneumatic seven-speed sequential gearbox, refined pushrod suspension, and an advanced energy recovery system—all crafted to reflect the cutting edge of endurance racing technology.

Following the high-octane spectacle at Sepang, Sime Motors Racing is set to continue its campaign in the Porsche Carrera Cup Asia with Rounds 8 and 9 at Thailand’s Bangsaen Street Circuit from 4 to 6 July 2025. They were closely followed by the #26 B-Quik Absolute Racing Audi R8 LMS GT3 EVO II in second place and the #31 Phantom Global Racing Audi R8 LMS GT3 EVO II in third, highlighting the fierce battle for supremacy among top-tier competitors.

In the GTC class, the #710 D1 Racing Team Lamborghini Super Trofeo EVO2 overcame initial setbacks to secure a well-deserved first place, demonstrating resilience and skill on the track. Additionally, the #326 Racing Team Audi RS3 LMS TCR emerged victorious in the TCR Endurance Asia category, further adding to the excitement of the event.
