Imagine both your exes starting to date. Awkward yes, but that is the case for Volvo. Ford as a past owner, and now current owner Geely, are about to enter into a collaborative effort that involves technology sharing as well as factories, the latter perhaps to overcome tariffs on imported vehicles.
Ford sold everyone’s favourite estate espouser to Geely 16 years ago and now a report by Reuters indicates that the duo are about to work together.
Reuters cites ‘eight people with knowledge’ that talks between Geely and Ford are ongoing. The primary focus is on Geely sharing Ford’s European factory space to assemble cars for the region as well as the ‘potential framework for shared vehicle technologies, including for automated driving.’

Additionally, Ford recently announced a major revision in its EV plans, slightly shifting away from the propulsion method. That potentially leaves some factory space available as it retools.
Ford’s CEO, Jim Farley, is a huge fan of the Chinese auto industry, especially the record-setting Xiaomi SU7.

Apart from Volvo and obviously Proton, Geely has been busy acquiring other brands such as Lotus, Polestar and Smart. If the deal to assemble cars in Europe at Ford’s factory comes to fruition, it would help the group avoid EU tariffs on imported Chinese cars.
