It is all but confirmed that the new 2026 Honda Prelude will be launched in Malaysia. The coupe’s rebirth was a welcomed one but also positioned it in a niche segment of its own. Therefore, the question is, who will the Prelude take on once it reaches our shores?

During a recent media event, Honda Malaysia said it would launch six new models for 2026 and dropped obvious hints such as their e:HEV technology, fun driving characteristics and the biggest giveaway, the S+ Shift system.

That confirms the Prelude as one of the six. However, seeing that the coupe sits in a niche of its own, we could not help but wonder who it would consider competition.

Before we delve into that, here is a quick recap of the Prelude’s specs. Under the hood sits a 2.0-liter naturally aspirated Atkinson-cycle engine, the same from the Civic Hybrid. It is paired with a dual-motor hybrid system. On its own, the petrol engine makes 139 PS and 177 Nm with the electric motor contributing 184 PS and 315 Nm for a combined of 203 PS.

The petrol engine does not typically drive the front wheels, except at highway speeds when a lock-up clutch engages to directly link the engine and wheels. Most of the propulsion is courtesy of the electric motor working with a single-speed reduction gear. The other electric motor receives power from the petrol engine and acts as a generator to feed the battery.

There is no gearbox, not in the traditional sense anyways. Instead, Honda’s S+ Shift system does its best imitation of one by simulating an eight-speed transmission. It does so via software that limits torque outputs in the virtual ‘gears.’

All that works to dispatch the century sprint in 7.9 seconds and onto a top speed of 180 km/h.

Some have said the Prelude is an amalgamation of the Civic Hybrid and Civic Type-R, as the latter contributes significantly to the ride and handling, by sharing its dual-axis strut front suspension. You’ll also get variable gear ratio steering, adaptive dampers and massive Brembo brakes at the front.

We can look to our neighbours Indonesia to gauge the price of the Prelude here. Over there, the coupe was recently opened for bookings with an estimated pricing of RM240k. The Civic Type-R goes for around RM340k.

Based on the Type-R’s pricing over here, we estimate the Malaysian Prelude to come in at just under the RM300k mark. For this article’s sake, we will put aside grey imports and also close an eye to the performance figures as the Prelude is underpowered against all but one.

1. Toyota GR86 and the Subaru BRZ

The most obvious target would be the Toyobaru twins, the Toyota GR86 and the Subaru BRZ. The former is priced at RM296k and packs a healthy 237 PS.

2. Toyota GR Yaris

The next contender is also from the Toyota camp, the GR Yaris. On paper, it might not be a direct competitor but being in the performance sphere and priced closely at RM315,600 makes it eligible for the list, though that 300 PS will leave the Prelude in its wake.

3. Mazda MX-5 RF

Perhaps something a little more within its performance bracket is the Mazda MX-5 RF. The only one on this list making less power than the Prelude at 181 PS, coupled with the RM295k price tag, makes this the closest competitor on paper.

4. Mini Cooper JCW

Leaving the east and looking west, the next contender is the fire-breathing Mini 3-Door JCW. For the first time, there is also an all-electric JCW variant, therefore making the Mini the only one on this list with electrification like the Prelude.

In its traditional turbocharged petrol form, the JCW whips out 231 PS while the EV variant makes a little more at 258 PS. However, only the former is priced around the Prelude at RM318,888 as the latter goes for RM218,888.

5. Volkswagen Golf GTI

Lastly, we come to the hot hatch king, the Golf GTI. With its 265 PS costing RM255,990, the GTI could be, by a stretch, the closest to the Prelude in terms of everyday usability and performance if measured by the breadth of its versatility.
