Honda has been out of the MPV segment since it discontinued the popular BR-V in early 2023 though the seven-seater was not quite a tall-roof MPV like the StepWgn. Honda did have an offering that fit that mould, the Odyssey, but it too was dropped from their local line-up in 2021.

Specs wise, it should not differ much from our neighbours. That means Honda’s e:HEV hybrid drivetrain, comprising a 2.0-litre petrol engine producing 145PS and 175 Nm of torque, coupled with an electric motor making 184 PS and 315 Nm of torque.

Currently in its sixth generation that was launched in 2022, the StepWgn previously made headlines with its predecessor’s ‘waku-waku’ tailgate that integrated a smaller side door, akin to suicide doors for the rear. That feature is not available anymore, replaced by a traditional tailgate.

It is a seven-seater in a 2-2-3 configuration with the middle row being captain chairs with ottomans. The third-row seats can be folded and stowed into the boot to extend the flat cargo area.

Even as a direct competitor to the Serena, the StepWgn will likely be CBU, thus placing it in a different price bracket against the CKD Nissan. Still, never discount the fact that Honda Malaysia might seriously consider putting the StepWgn together in Malacca.

In the local grey market, the StepWgn is a popular choice and goes up against the likes of the Toyota Noah and its twin, the Toyota Voxy.
