Production of the locally-assembled (CKD) Peugeot 408 at the Stellantis Gurun plant in Kedah will now see the stylish fastback be exported to a third country in the region, Taiwan.

The Gurun plant has undergone a manufacturing line upgrade, including specialised research & development for powertrain calibration and localised parts development at a cost of 1.5 million Euros (~RM7 million).

Taiwan is the third market to receive the Malaysian-built model, after Thailand in 2024 and Cambodia in 2025. Furthermore, additional markets across the Asia-Pacific region are being evaluated for the export of the 408.

The 408 was the first model launched under the Stellantis Malaysia entity and sports a completely redesigned aesthetic packed with advanced engineering and technology.

Stellantis has long viewed the Gurun plant as a key point in its regional expansion plans by serving as an export hub. The group will gradually increase production capacity with the aim to achieve full capacity of exporting 280,000 vehicles to 20 countries across the Asia-Pacific region by 2028.

Such growth is underpinned by a strategy set for the Gurun plant to accommodate the manufacturing of internal combustion engines, battery electric vehicles and mild hybrid electric vehicles.

Among these efforts includes the localised assembly of Leapmotor electric vehicles, starting with the Leapmotor C10.

“Our vision to transform Gurun into a key regional driver is taking shape, supported by strategic investments to upgrade this vital facility for both local and export production. This latest development emphasises our commitment to scaling production outputs in Malaysia while extending the breadth of brands and models within the Stellantis portfolio to meet the diverse needs of the region,” said Isaac Yeo, Managing Director of Stellantis Asean.
