The Golf traces its roots to Volkswagen’s Wolfsburg plant and the image was teased during a meeting by the carmaker to reinforce its commitment to the plant, which will continue the tradition and make the new hatchback.

Volkswagen will use the SSP architecture for the new Golf and its design will be inspired by certain elements of the ID. Polo and ID while previous generations of the Golf will also heavily influence the final looks.

In fact, Volkswagen Group design chief Andreas Mindt specifically mentioned the Golf Mk7, referring to it as a masterpiece of blending all the best elements of the Golf over its lifespan and still appearing fresh.

Taking a moment to touch on one of the chief complaints regarding the Golf Mk8, Mindt said the new Golf will have physical controls for key functions such as air-conditioning and volume.

The ICE variants of the new Golf will actually be a heavily revised version of the current Golf Mk8, including the engines. Only the BEV variant will be new and feature 800 V architecture. It will also pack more advanced batteries for optimised range and quicker charging times. It would likely be called the ID Golf.

Lastly, the SSP architecture for the new Golf Mk9 will be developed with software by Rivian, for greater flexibility over its hardware to access OTA updates.
