From playing by their rules to now crafting those very rules, BYD has officially joined the International Automotive Task Force (IATF) as its newest member. The manufacturer is the second Chinese carmaker at the table and the first 100% new energy vehicle (NEV) brand in the organisation.

It joins other major automotive giants such as Volkswagen, BMW, General Motors and Geely within the organisation. The IATF AISBL (Association Internationale Sans But Lucratif) is a Belgian legal structure for international non-profit organisations formed on 4 March 2026.

Joining the organisation allows BYD to directly participate in shaping and setting global automotive quality management standards that govern the global automotive supply chain.

BYD secured a recommendation from the Automotive Industry Action Group (AIAG) and won unanimous votes from existing members, marking its transition from a high-volume participant to a global regulator. The timing could not be more significant as the industry shifts towards complex 800 V architectures and intelligent driving systems, ensuring consistency across its 119 countries of operation is critical.

While Geely broke the Western monopoly in the organisation by becoming the first Asian IATF voting member, BYD’s entry into the IATF AISBL signals the governance of Asian brands in the electrification era. The BYD representative, Shu Wenfeng, will contribute technical expertise to help shape future EV-centric quality frameworks.

Prior to this, BYD has focussed more on interior tolerances in an attempt to close the perceived gap between Chinese manufacturing speed and European luxury. The primary purpose is to ensure that rapid expansion does not come at the cost of reliability that is expected in mature markets such Europe and South East Asia.

Another step in that direction came as BYD mandated its suppliers achieve IATF 16949 certification for global quality management standards. BYD recently took a major step forward with the recently debuted Blade 2.0 battery capable of flash charging. On top of that, rumours have swirled that the brand is also looking to enter Formula 1 to boost its global appeal.

However, no matter how well BYD bridges the gap between manufacturing speed and quality, its seat at the table has no effect on trade barriers and tariffs, which remains an obstacle in penetrating certain markets.
