The name Karamjit Singh needs no introduction in the local and international motorsports fraternity. Popularly known as the Flying Sikh, Malaysia’s most successful rally driver has Scandinavian-flicked his car to numerous titles and now we have a first look at the movie “Terbang” that is inspired by the man.

Among the feathers in his decorated cap is being the first Asian driver to win the Federation Internationale del’Automobile (FIA) Production Car World Championship for Drivers, the 2001 Asia Pacific Rally Championship for Drivers, the 2002 FIA Production Car World Championship for Drivers and the 2002 and 2004 FIA Asia-Pacific Rally Championship for Drivers. He also wheeled for the Petronas Eon Racing Team (PERT) and Team Proton Pert Malaysia.

The film will be directed by Chiu Keng Guan, known for his blockbusters The Journey and Ola Bola, though he shared that “Terbang” is not a biopic but rather heavily inspired by Karamjit’s journey.

Karamjit himself has said that roughly 60% of the story is based on his real-life experiences and is hoping the movie will revive the rallying scene in the country. He said that the local scene tapered off around 15 years ago due to a lack of sponsorship, which is the reason he stopped competing as well.

The movie’s lead role of Ajeet will be played by actor Irfan Zaini with the rest of the cast comprising Zizan Razak, Shweta Sekhon, Diana Danielle and Jack Tan. Shooting for the movie begun last year in Malaysia and even New Zealand to capture the rallying background.

The short clip shows the PERT Mitsubishi Evo 6 that Karamjit used in its iconic Petronas livery kicking up dust through a rally stage. If that is anything to go by, the movie should be a visual feast. Terbang is scheduled for release this year around the Merdeka period.
