Anyways, the ID. Polo GTI is the first electric GTI and apart from the missing internal combustion engine, Volkswagen insists that that it retains the traditional hot hatch soul.

Powering the front wheels is a single 226 PS electric motor with 290 Nm of torque. If that does not sound quick, well, it is not particularly so. The century sprint arrives in 6.8 seconds and it tops out at 175 kph.

Even with an electronic limited-slip differential, lowered suspension and bigger brakes with red calipers, it is among the slower electric hot hatches.

However, it does weigh in at 1,540 kg, making it among the light for an EV. That is primarily due to the small nickel-manganese-cobalt (NMC) 52 kWh battery pack that sees the WLTP range check in at 424 km. With the maximum rated 105 kW charging, it can go from 10-80% in 24 minutes.

It looks every bit a GTI though, with an aggressive front fascia and a GTI-badged side skirts. At the rear, there is a diffuser that actually makes it 5 cm longer than the regular ID. Polo. The 19-inch wheels are unique to the model and the GTI wording on the centre caps are a nice touch.

On the inside, the steering’s shape takes on a flat top and bottom, something increasingly common in the EV sphere now. The grippy bucket seats are wrapped in the signature traditional tartan pattern found in GTIs.

The central infotainment touchscreen measures in at 12.9 inches and has a retro display mode that mimics the graphic details of the Golf Mk1. This includes a track display for songs displayed as a cassette.

Even the 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster mirrors the analogue cluster from the Golk Mk1 though there are other modes with the usual digital digits.

GTI-specific features such as adaptive DCC are all standard kit here. Volkswagen has gone the extra mile to retain the GTI feel with fake combustion-engine acceleration sounds.

There will be a hotter Clubsport variant coming along later. That includes more power and virtual gears for fake shifts with paddle shifters. The current paddles on the twin-spoke steering are to adjust the regenerative braking levels.

On the other hand, Volkswagen has chosen to delay the upcoming electric Golf to 2030 from its initial 2028 date.

The EV Golf is based on the group’s new SSP platform, developed in collaboration with Rivian. It is not entirely surprising as the ID.3 electric hatchback, similar in size to the Golf, was recently facelifted and renamed the ID.3 Neo. Given that model cycles from Wolfsburg generally have a 4-year lifespan, 2030 seems about right for the EV Golf.
