On local assembly, or what Xpeng refers to as its KD strategy, the company says it is on schedule to introduce the new X9 as its second locally assembled model in Malaysia. The refreshed electric MPV is currently sold here as a fully imported (CBU) model from China, while the exact timeline for the CKD version has yet to be confirmed.

This comes just days after the first locally assembled Xpeng G6 rolled off the line at EP Manufacturing Berhad’s (EPMB) plant in Melaka. This makes the G6 Xpeng’s first CKD model in Malaysia. EPMB was announced as Xpeng’s local assembly partner last December, with the G6, X9 and X9 PowerX range-extended electric vehicle (REEV) set to be produced at the Melaka facility.

According to Xpeng’s presentation, the company’s 2026 CKD strategy includes the successful mass production of the G6, followed by the introduction of the new X9 as its second model. Xpeng also said its Malaysian operations will use advanced ADAS calibration equipment identical to those used in its global smart factories.

Beyond vehicle assembly, Xpeng plans to set up a dedicated local R&D team in Malaysia and form strategic partnerships in advanced high-tech fields. The company also said it will collaborate with the Malaysian Investment Development Authority (MIDA) and ARM to invest in and support the establishment of an automotive semiconductor and chip centre.

This aligns with comments from Bermaz Auto group chief executive officer Dato’ Sri Francis Lee, who said, “Xpeng’s vision as the Explorer of Future Mobility is anchored in making cutting-edge technology accessible to all, supported by its AI Tech Tree Strategy that unites AI, energy solutions and embodied intelligence. This approach accelerates advancements across autonomous driving, robotics, flying vehicles and next-generation smart mobility while strengthening Malaysia’s automotive ecosystem as Xpeng moves toward establishing CKD operations at the EPMB facility in Melaka.

“These developments will uplift local capabilities and support the nation’s transition toward a more competitive, future-ready EV landscape, further complemented by the arrival of the X9,” he added.

Xpeng Malaysia is also targeting a wider retail footprint. By the end of 2026, the company aims to have 18 high-standard 3S outlets covering key regions in Malaysia. By 2028, that number is set to grow to 30 high-standard 3S outlets, which Xpeng says will provide 100% state coverage across Malaysia.

Payment integration and charging discounts are also planned to be rolled out in 2026. Xpeng also says its megawatt hypercharging technology will be introduced to Malaysia in 2026, representing a major step up from the 350 kW DC charger launched previously.

Xpeng is also highlighting its ASEAN Borderless Warranty, covering Malaysia, Thailand, Singapore and Indonesia. The system is aimed at supporting owners travelling across the region with wide coverage, clear pricing and connected data systems.
