We suspect this likely stemmed from the worst traffic jam in history that, you guessed it, happened in China, 16 years ago. The saga lasted 10 days across National Highway 110, stretching over 97km and forcing some drivers to remain in their cars for five days.

Apparently, Xpeng is dead-serious about building the Land Aircraft Carrier as it is already in pre-production and ostensibly, some 7,000 people have placed an order for it. Power to them, sprinkled with a little envy as well.

The Land Aircraft Carrier looks like a Hot Wheels Tooned version of the Tesla Cybertruck. It has six driven wheels and a range-extended powertrain that is supposedly good for 966km of range on a single charge and seating for four. And yes, an aircraft in the rear.

Said six-rotor drone folds up and is stored in the sealed rear cargo hatch, which is also where it is charged. However, the drone only has seating for one person that can pilot it manually together with autonomous input for flight stability.

Most of us would expect mobility solutions in 2026 to comprise a folding electric scooter in the rear of your car for last mile commutes, in the mould of the Honda Motocompacto. This however, definitely takes the cake or flies you to it.

Having taken orders, Xpeng looks quite serious about making the Land Aircraft Carrier take off, pun intended. Its subsidiary, Aridge, will handled the drone portion of the build and is even working on a tilt-rotor version for extended flight.

Xpeng executives in Europe have indicated that their factory is prepared to handle assembly with pre-production work already underway.

Lastly, we come to the most obvious hurdle in getting the Land Aircraft Carrier off the ground, another pun. Regulations are almost non-existent for something like this.

Would you need a pilot’s license to fly one? Could you buy the Land Aircraft Carrier without a pilot’s license? Where would you deploy it?

Nonetheless, the very idea and the fact that Xpeng are serious about it is just pure cool and the stuff of fantasies. For years, we were sold the idea of flying cars, and nobody ever thought of separating the two entities but pairing them together.

Now, who do we have to bribe to review the Land Aircraft Carrier?
