Xpeng has introduced a new range-extended version of the G6 electric SUV in China, called the G6 PowerX, following the earlier introduction of a similar setup on the X9 MPV.

Like the X9 PowerX, the G6 gains a 1.5-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine, although it does not drive the wheels directly. Instead, the engine functions solely as a generator, charging the battery and extending the vehicle’s total driving range.

The system pairs the petrol generator with a single rear-mounted electric motor producing 296 PS (218 kW) and 450 Nm of torque, allowing the G6 PowerX to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 6.7 seconds, slightly slower than the fully electric version.

Energy is stored in a 55.8 kWh LFP battery, which is slightly smaller than the pack used in the EV model. Xpeng claims 450 km of pure electric range (CLTC), while total combined range reaches 1,704 km when the range extender is used. Fuel consumption is rated at 2.24 litres per 100 km under combined operation. Even when the battery is depleted, the vehicle is said to return 5.9 litres per 100 km.

Despite the addition of the combustion engine, the G6 PowerX continues to use Xpeng’s 800-volt electrical architecture. The battery supports 5C DC fast charging, allowing a 10–80% charge in around 12 minutes, similar to the standard EV version.

Beyond the revised powertrain, the PowerX also introduces adaptive dampers with AI-assisted chassis control and updated hydraulic bushings. Visually, the model remains almost identical to the EV variant, with only a slightly more open front grille and a fuel filler door distinguishing it.

Inside, the G6 PowerX carries over the updated cabin from the facelifted model, including a 10.25-inch digital instrument display and a 15.6-inch central touchscreen, alongside twin 50-watt wireless chargers and an 18-speaker Xopera sound system. Xpeng also claims the model is the only range-extended SUV in its class to feature active noise cancellation.

Driver assistance systems are powered by three of Xpeng’s Turing AI chips, delivering a combined 2,250 TOPS of computing power. This supports the brand’s second-generation Vision-Language-Action (VLA) intelligent driving system, which Xpeng says is designed to eventually enable higher levels of autonomous driving.

The Xpeng G6 PowerX is priced at 186,800 yuan (around RM 107k) in China and is offered in a single variant.
