Chery Malaysia today conducted a live battery safety demonstration, subjecting its plug-in hybrid battery to extreme heat conditions in front of media and government representatives.

Held in Serdang, the event saw the battery used in the Chery Tiggo 7 PHEV and Tiggo 8 PHEV undergo a high-temperature fire test, which included a preheating phase followed by direct flame exposure for 1 minute and 20 seconds.

According to Chery, the battery was exposed to temperatures exceeding 1,000°C during the test. Throughout the demonstration, there was no fire escalation or uncontrolled deformation observed.

The session was conducted outdoors, allowing attendees to observe the condition of the battery before, during and after the test. Chery says this approach is intended to provide transparency, demonstrating safety performance beyond controlled laboratory conditions.

The battery tested is part of Chery’s Super Hybrid system used in its PHEV models. The company states that similar safety validation exercises have been conducted globally, including collision tests, seawater immersion, extreme heat exposure, and even ballistic penetration tests in other markets.

However, specific details such as the battery’s state of charge during the fire test were not disclosed. This is a key variable, as battery behaviour under thermal stress can differ significantly depending on charge level. A fully charged battery typically represents a more severe test scenario compared to one at a lower state of charge.

Separately, Chery also highlighted the safety credentials of its electrified models, noting that the Tiggo 7 PHEV has achieved a 5-star ASEAN NCAP rating, along with a 10-year or 200,000 km warranty covering the battery, motor and control unit.
