Chery Malaysia has officially launched the Chery Tiggo 9 in Malaysia, which now sits at the top of the brand’s local SUV line-up, above the Tiggo 8 Pro.
Pricing is where things need a bit of explaining. Chery Malaysia is offering the Tiggo 9 with two launch packages. The Prime package is priced at RM 179,800 on-the-road without insurance and includes a RM 5,000 cash rebate, RM 3,000 petrol subsidy and one year of free insurance. After the RM 8,000 rebate and subsidy, the effective price is RM 171,800, before taking the insurance value into account.
The Flexi package is priced lower at RM 166,800, but does not include the rebate, petrol subsidy, or free insurance. Chery Malaysia says the Flexi package works out to be RM 500 more favourable overall.
Both packages come with a seven-year or 150,000 km vehicle warranty, five years of free labour service, and a 10-year or one million km engine warranty.
For context, the Tiggo 8 Pro is currently priced at RM 159,800, while the Jaecoo J8 starts from RM 178,800 and the Omoda C9 starts from RM 168,800.
For Malaysia, the Chery Tiggo 9 is powered by a 2.0-litre TGDi turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine producing 256 PS and 390 Nm. The engine is paired with a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission and an all-wheel drive system.
This is the same engine output as the Tiggo 8 Pro, but the Tiggo 9 gets AWD instead of front-wheel drive. It also comes with seven drive modes, namely Eco, Normal, Sport, Sand, Mud, Snow, and Off-Road. The 0-100 km/h sprint is done in 9.3 seconds.
In terms of size, the Tiggo 9 measures 4,810 mm long, 1,925 mm wide and 1,741 mm tall, with a 2,800 mm wheelbase. That makes it 88 mm longer and 65 mm wider than the Tiggo 8 Pro, while its wheelbase is 90 mm longer.
Boot space is listed at 143 litres with all three rows in use, 448 litres with the third row folded, and 2,065 litres with the second and third rows folded. The second row folds 60:40, while the third row folds 50:50.
Suspension consists of MacPherson struts at the front and multi-link independent suspension at the rear. Braking is handled by ventilated discs in front and discs at the rear, while the Tiggo 9 rides on 20-inch wheels with 245/50 R20 tyres. Ground clearance is listed at 205 mm.
On the outside, the Tiggo 9 gets LED headlights, automatic headlights, LED daytime running lights, sequential turn signals, roof rails, a rear spoiler, LED taillights, and a hands-free powered tailgate. Two exterior colours are available, namely Matte Grey and Carbon Black.
Inside, the Tiggo 9 gets a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster, a 15.6-inch 2.5K infotainment display powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8155 chip, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, an HD head-up display, a 50W wireless charger with cooling function, and a 14-speaker Sony premium audio system.
Comfort features include a 10-way powered driver’s seat with memory and welcome function, a six-way powered front passenger seat, powered steering adjustment, front seat massage, ventilated and heated front seats, and a front passenger boss switch.
The Tiggo 9 also gets a cooled front centre armrest storage compartment, dual-zone automatic air-conditioning, an N95 cabin filter, rear air-conditioning controls, rear individual air vents, second-row sunshades, and second-row ventilated and heated seats.
Other cabin features include synthetic leather upholstery, double-glazed acoustic glass, dynamic 64-colour ambient lighting, illuminated door sills and walk-away auto lock. A panoramic sunroof with a retractable sunshade is also fitted.
On the safety front, the Tiggo 9 comes with 10 airbags, including rear side airbags, a driver’s knee airbag and a front centre airbag. It also gets front and rear parking sensors, a 540-degree HD panoramic camera, ISOFIX, tyre pressure monitoring, hill start assist, hill descent control, electronic stability control, and traction control.
ADAS features include autonomous emergency braking, front collision warning, adaptive cruise control, integrated cruise assist, traffic jam assist, lane change assist, lane keeping assist, emergency lane keeping assist, lane departure warning, lane departure prevention, blind spot detection, and rear cross traffic alert.
