Audi has unveiled the all-new third-generation Q5L in China through its FAW–Audi joint venture, giving one of the brand’s most important models a much-needed refresh in a highly competitive market. The latest Q5L arrives with a longer body, cutting-edge driver assistance technology developed with Huawei and a new-generation turbocharged engine, with prices starting from 309,800

The launch comes at a crucial time for Audi in China. Last year, the FAW–Audi joint venture delivered 133,589 units of the Q5L, marking an 8.2 per cent year-on-year decline. As a long-standing pillar of Audi’s local line-up, the Q5L required fresh momentum, and the third-generation model is clearly designed to deliver that boost.

Built on Audi’s latest Premium Platform Combustion (PPC) architecture, the new Q5L closely mirrors the global Q5 in overall design, featuring sharper body surfacing and a full-width rear light signature. That said, the China-specific model gains its own touches, including semi-hidden door handles and a high-mounted brake light that set it apart from the international version. Buyers can choose from black, green, white, silver and brown exterior finishes.

One of the biggest changes is size. The new Audi Q5L measures 4,842 mm long, 1,900 mm wide and 1,660 mm tall, riding on a 2,945 mm wheelbase. This makes it 125 mm longer than the standard global Q5 and 72 mm longer than the outgoing second-generation Q5L, while the wheelbase has been stretched by 38 mm. Despite its increased footprint, the new Q5L remains a five-seater SUV, focusing on rear passenger comfort rather than adding a third row.

On the road, the Q5L sits on 19-, 20- or 21-inch wheels, depending on variant. Lighting technology is a strong highlight, with headlights featuring 16 high-beam zones and a rear light bar made up of 266 individual LEDs. Technology is taken even further with the inclusion of two Huawei-supplied LiDAR sensors. When specified with the optional assisted driving system, the Q5L is capable of recognising parking spaces automatically and handling navigation on autopilot across both urban roads and highways.

Inside, the cabin reflects Audi’s latest digital-first approach. The dashboard is dominated by three screens, comprising an 11.9-inch digital instrument display, a 14.5-inch OLED central touchscreen and a 10.9-inch display for the front passenger. A large 13.1-inch head-up display is also available, offering augmented navigation with real-world road overlays. Comfort and convenience features include wireless phone charging, configurable ambient lighting, heated seats and a 16-speaker Bang & Olufsen sound system.

Power comes from Audi’s fifth-generation EA888 engine, a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder paired with a 48-volt mild-hybrid system using a belt starter generator. The entry-level version produces 201 hp and 340 Nm of torque, while higher-spec variants deliver up to 268 hp and 400 Nm. All models are equipped with a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission and Audi’s all-wheel-drive system as standard, with air suspension available as an option.

With its larger dimensions, advanced Huawei-developed driver assistance technology and updated powertrain, the new Audi Q5L represents a significant step forward for Audi in China. At a starting price equivalent to around RM209,000, it is positioned to reignite interest in one of the brand’s most recognisable SUVs and strengthen Audi’s presence in its most important global market.
