Volvo had earlier announced that the EX60 would incorporate the use of cell-to-body construction that boosts energy density by 20% and cuts poundage for a longer range whilst also quickening the charging rate by up to 31%. An additional step in cutting weight was the use of mega-casting.

Running on 800V architecture, the EX60 supports up to 400 kW of DC fast charging, positioning itself as the aforementioned fastest charging Volvo. At that rate, it will gain up to 340 km of range in around 10 minutes.

The silhouette largely resembles the XC60 with more EV-design cues, such as the deleted front grille and an updated ‘Thor’s Hammer’ LED signature that resembles the newer EX40 and EX90.

At the rear, Volvo accentuates the sides with vertical taillights as well as LEDs flanking the lower sides of the rear windscreen. Completing the exterior features are illuminated wing grip door handles and classy frameless doors.

Keeping with Volvo’s contemporary design philosophy is a minimalist interior and dashboard, spearheaded by a 15-inch OLED touchscreen infotainment display and a 11.4-inch digital instrument cluster.

Another first for the EX60 is the integration of Google’s Gemini AI assistant, widening the scope of natural language queries and commands. Computing capabilities are managed by Volvo’s HuginCore computing system.

Orchestral music quality is a given with the 21-speaker Bowers & Wilkins audio system but if you are fancy and would prefer Pavarotti himself serenading beside you, the next best option if to upgrade to the 28-speaker Bowers & Wilkins High-Fidelity system with extra speakers, more modes and Active Road Noise Cancellation.

The signature crystal media controls are located below the central screen, below which are a wireless charger and a large storage space.

More storage space is found between the two front seats in a felt-lined floating centre console. You can find more convenience with the armrest and its sliding cupholder. A convenient shelf is positioned near the two USB-C ports for the front passengers.

Of course, rear passengers get their own USB-C ports and controls for the rear climate control, alongside power-reclining seats and heated booster seats for the small ones.

Being synonymous with safety, Volvo continues to push the envelope of enhancing safety. Credited with inventing the modern three-point seatbelt, Volvo has taken it a step further by reinventing it, giving us a new multi-adaptive seatbelt and first putting it into use in the EX60.

The seatbelt offers better protection by adapting to real-time traffic variables and adjusting for the occupant wearing it. A multitude of sensors inside and outside, such as an accelerometer, is combined with occupant data like height, weight, body shape and seating position. The end result is optimum pretension for maximum protection and minimal injury. Think of it as a smart seatbelt.

Apart from the new seatbelt, the EX60 houses a reinforced safety cage and the usual suite of active safety systems.

The ADAS suite comprises the following:

  • Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC)
  • Collision Avoidance
  • Run-off Road Mitigation
  • Rear Collision Warning
  • Speed limit assist
  • Park assist camera
  • Curve speed assist
  • Blind Spot Information System (BLIS) with steering mitigation
  • Occupant Sensing

Now all we do is wait for the EX60 to reach our shores, which will hopefully be sooner rather than later and in CKD form for competitive pricing.
