Visually, the new X5 adopts BMW’s latest Neue Klasse-influenced design language, but keeps the familiar proportions of a large luxury SUV. The front end now gets a more upright look, vertically aligned BMW kidney Iconic Glow lighting and a new double-X light signature.

This double-X light design is used for the low beams, daytime running lights, side lights and indicators. BMW says the double-X icons can also be activated or deactivated, in which case diagonal icons are shown instead. Adaptive LED headlights with cornering lights, matrix high beam and BMW Selective Beam come as standard.

The side profile is also cleaner than before, with new BMW Winglet door handles integrated into the B- and C-pillars. These allow for uninterrupted door surfaces, while also controlling the electrically powered doors. Soft Close is standard, while automatic doors are offered as an option for the first time on the X5.

At the rear, the new X5 gets slimmer taillights that continue the double-X design theme. Depending on variant, the X5 is available with 21-, 22- or 23-inch wheels, with 23-inch rims being offered on the model for the first time.

The BMW X5 M60e xDrive sits at the top of the initial range as the M Performance model. It gets model-specific bumpers, quad exhaust tailpipes, 22-inch wheels as standard, M Sport brakes and M Yellow Lights, which bring yellow lighting elements to the X5’s double-X front signature.

Total output is rated at 400 hp, or around 406 PS, and 580 Nm. It uses an eight-speed Steptronic transmission and BMW xDrive all-wheel drive, with 0-100 km/h taking 5.3 seconds.

Two plug-in hybrid versions will follow. The BMW X5 50e xDrive combines a 3.0-litre petrol engine with an electric motor for a total output of 489 hp, or around 496 PS, and 700 Nm. It does 0-100 km/h in 5.0 seconds and offers an electric-only WLTP range of 86 to 102 km.

Charging is also a major highlight. The iX5 supports DC fast charging at up to 460 kW, with a 10 to 80% charge taking 23 minutes. BMW says 10 minutes of charging can add up to 350 km of range. AC charging is rated at up to 22 kW as standard, allowing a full charge in 7 hours and 30 minutes.

The electric X5 also supports bidirectional charging. This includes Vehicle-to-Load, Vehicle-to-Home and Vehicle-to-Grid functions, allowing the battery to power external devices, support a home energy system or feed energy back into the grid where supported.

BMW will also introduce the iX5 Hydrogen at a later stage. Developed together with Toyota, the hydrogen fuel cell version uses BMW xDrive all-wheel drive, a third-generation fuel cell system and BMW’s Hydrogen Flat Storage system.
