The Road Transport Department (JPJ) has collected RM93.51 million in summons payments so far under its 50 per cent discount programme, with just days left before the offer comes to an end. The collection, recorded as of yesterday, involved the settlement of 702,606 outstanding summonses since the initiative began in November. According to NST, JPJ
According to NST, JPJ enforcement director Datuk Muhammad Kifli Ma Hassan said a significant portion of the settled cases involved offences detected through the Automated Awareness Safety System, or AwAS, which is primarily used to curb speeding. A total of 404,535 summonses linked to AwAS have been paid, highlighting the scale of speeding-related violations on Malaysian roads.
Despite the encouraging response, the amount collected represents only a small slice of the bigger picture. According to Kifli, unpaid summonses currently stand at around RM1.42 billion, indicating that a large number of motorists have yet to take advantage of the reduced rates. With the deadline fast approaching, JPJ is urging road users to clear their outstanding fines while the discount is still available.
Breaking down the figures further, Kifli said 295,955 of the settled summonses were issued under JPJ (P) 22 notices in accordance with the Road Transport Act. These cover a range of common traffic offences, including running red lights, using emergency lanes improperly, using mobile phones while driving and overtaking across double lines. An additional 2,116 summonses were related to offences under the Commercial Vehicles Licensing Board Act.
The discount campaign, which runs from November 1 to December 30, gives motorists a two-month window to settle outstanding JPJ summonses at half the usual rate. With only a short time remaining, authorities are again reminding drivers that this is a limited opportunity to resolve their fines at a lower cost before normal rates resume.
