This should rank as one of Gothenburg’s greatest achievements as the upcoming Volvo EX60 EV can count on possessing quite a few remarkable feats such as an impressive range, incredibly quick charging and did we mention a revolutionary new seatbelt to further make their cars safer.

Perlis to Johor on a single charge? Yes, the EX60 will get it done. It lays claim to a best-in-class 810 kilometres on a single charge in an all-wheel drive configuration. Of course, it goes without saying that the competition will be left stuck not in its wake, but at the last charging station.

“The EX60 is designed to be a gamechanger. With our new electric vehicle architecture, we directly address the main worries that customers have when considering a switch to a fully electric car. The result is class-leading range and fast charging speeds, marking the end of range anxiety,” said Anders Bell, Chief Technology Officer at Volvo Cars.

Apart from being the Volvo EV with the longest range, the EX60 will also wear the hat of fastest charging among its siblings. Owners won’t have to schedule charging sessions over their lunch break as it can now be done with a quick coffee stop.

Hooked up to a 400 kW fast charger, a 10 minute session will add up to 340km of range, or about the time it takes to fill up the fuel tank of an internal combustion car. A few key sections of the car combine to allow the faster charging speeds. From 800 volt architecture to in-house software, it all works seamlessly together to transfer energy into the battery more efficiently.

Although battery specifications will only be revealed during the launch, the EX60 is expected to be offered with two battery options. The smaller, RWD variant will likely have a 83 kWh lithium iron phosphate pack while the larger AWD version, that quoted here, should carry a 106 kWh nickel manganese cobalt battery. All brand new EX60 customers will receive a 10-year battery warranty.

Volvo attributes its class-leading range to its SPA3 advanced electric car architecture that allows maximum efficiency for all the systems within the car.

Furthermore, the battery is directly integrated into the structure of the car with cell-to-body technology and powers proprietary electric motors to boost efficiency and reduce weight, the latter key towards improving range.

The EX60 is also the first Volvo that incorporates mega casting into its construction. The technology integrates hundreds of smaller components into a single, high-precision casting in results in further weight reduction.

Volvo’s portfolio company, Breathe Battery Technologies, has also developed smarter algorithms for battery management that constantly adjust how it takes in power to keep the pack in its ideal operating window at all times and in all weather conditions.

Lastly, speaking about Volvo and not mentioning safety does not do the marque justice. The inventor of the three-point seatbelt has reinvented the seatbelt here.

The EX60 will feature a new multi-adaptive seatbelt that offers better protection. It does so by adapting to real-time traffic variables and adjusting for the occupant wearing it. A plethora of sensors inside and outside, such as an accelerometer, is combined with occupant data like height, weight, body shape and seating position. The end result is optimum pretension for maximum protection and minimal injury. Think of it as a smart seatbelt.

The Volvo EX60 will be revealed on 21 January 2026 and the entire reveal event will be livestreamed here.
