The debut of the i5 eDrive40 M Sport Pro marks a historic milestone for both BMW Group Malaysia and the wider region, as it becomes the first fully electric BMW to be assembled locally, not only in Malaysia but across the Asia-Pacific. The move reflects the brand’s long-term investment in Malaysia’s EV ecosystem, while positioning the country as a regional hub for premium electric vehicle manufacturing. Alongside it, the long-wheelbase iX1 eDrive20L M Sport broadens BMW’s compact electric offering, building on the strong reception of the standard iX1 introduced locally a year earlier.

As an executive sedan designed to balance business duties with personal driving pleasure, the locally assembled BMW i5 eDrive40 M Sport Pro brings the latest fifth-generation BMW eDrive technology to the fore. It offers a WLTP-rated driving range of between 513 km and 627 km, supported by a comprehensive suite of driver assistance systems and a focus on refinement and comfort. The electric motor mounted on the rear axle produces 250 kW or 340 hp and 430 Nm of torque, allowing the i5 to sprint from 0 to 100 km/h in six seconds and reach a top speed of 193 km/h.

Inside, the cabin is built around BMW’s Curved Display, pairing a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster with a 14.9-inch central touchscreen, operated via touch or natural voice commands. The BMW Interaction Bar stretches across the dashboard and doors, combining touch-sensitive controls with ambient lighting while discreetly integrating the air vents. M-specific touches such as the leather steering wheel, M seatbelts and anthracite headliner reinforce the sporty theme, while BMW Individual Merino leather upholstery, carbon fibre accents and a panoramic glass roof elevate the premium feel.

Comfort and technology are central to the i5 experience, with fully electric sport seats featuring memory and lumbar support, four-zone climate control, wireless charging, roller sunblinds and an interior camera capable of capturing photos and videos. Rear passengers benefit from generous legroom and headroom, making the i5 equally accommodating in the back. Audio duties are handled by a 655-watt Bowers & Wilkins surround sound system with 18 speakers, paired with BMW IconicSounds Electric to enhance the EV driving experience.

Charging performance matches its long-distance capability. The i5 supports AC charging of up to 22 kW, enabling a full charge in just over four hours, while DC fast charging at up to 205 kW allows a 10 to 80 per cent top-up in 34 minutes. Adaptive Suspension Professional with Integral Active Steering comes standard, improving agility at low speeds and stability at higher speeds by allowing the rear wheels to steer by up to 2.5 degrees.

Connectivity is handled by BMW Operating System 8.5 with QuickSelect, supported by BMW Maps with charge-optimised navigation, Digital Key Plus, a personal eSIM and comprehensive ConnectedDrive services. Proactive Care and condition-based servicing further enhance peace of mind by monitoring the vehicle’s health and alerting owners before issues arise.

Alongside the i5, BMW Group Malaysia has expanded its compact electric SUV range with the introduction of the BMW iX1 eDrive20L M Sport. The long-wheelbase variant gains an additional 110 mm between the axles and an overall length increase of 116 mm, translating into noticeably improved rear-seat comfort. Rear legroom grows by 81 mm, while kneeroom increases by 107 mm, making it a more practical choice for families and frequent rear passengers.

The exterior design retains the familiar iX1 silhouette but adds subtle distinctions, including an enclosed grille with Extended Shadowline trim and X-shaped detailing. Slim Adaptive LED headlights with M Shadowline accents, flush door handles and 19-inch M light-alloy wheels complement the elongated profile, while full-LED L-shaped tail-lights and Shadowline roof rails complete the look. Boot space stands at 490 litres and can be expanded to 1,600 litres with the rear seats folded.

Inside, the iX1 eDrive20L M Sport benefits from softer seat foam and a longer seat base for improved comfort. The driver is greeted by BMW’s Curved Display and Head-Up Display running the latest BMW Operating System 9, while M interior elements underline its sporty character. A key highlight is the panoramic skyroof, which spans the cabin without a central bar and can be shaded electronically for privacy. Standard equipment includes sport seats with electric adjustment and memory, automatic climate control, wireless charging and a 205-watt Harman Kardon sound system with 12 speakers.

Power comes from a front-mounted electrically excited synchronous motor producing 150 kW or 204 hp and 250 Nm of torque. This allows the iX1 eDrive20L M Sport to reach 100 km/h in 8.6 seconds and continue on to a top speed of 175 km/h. Its 66.5 kWh battery delivers up to 433 km of WLTP-rated range, with AC charging at 11 kW taking just under seven hours for a full charge. DC fast charging at up to 130 kW enables a 10 to 80 per cent recharge in 32 minutes, adding up to 120 km of range in as little as 10 minutes. A newly tuned comfort-focused suspension has been developed specifically for this long-wheelbase variant to suit daily driving conditions.

Safety and assistance systems come as standard, with Driving Assistance Plus offering adaptive cruise control, lane support and speed limit information, while Parking Assistant Plus provides surround view, remote 3D viewing and automated parking functions. Pedestrian safety systems and acoustic protection for pedestrians are also included.

Beyond the vehicles themselves, BMW Group Malaysia continues to place strong emphasis on ownership support through its “Relax. We Care.” service promise. Proactive Care continuously monitors vehicle condition via onboard sensors and notifies owners of potential issues through the My BMW App or iDrive system. The BMW Service & Repair Inclusive programme provides five years of unlimited mileage warranty and service coverage, extended to six years for BEVs, along with an eight-year high-voltage battery warranty. BMW Roadside Assistance offers 24/7 support, including towing and accommodation if required, ensuring a worry-free ownership experience from day one.
