September is historically a slower month for car sales, and this year was no exception, with the total industry volume (TIV) estimated at 56,067 units, marking a 22.2% decrease from the previous month. Despite the dip, the YTD total remains ahead of 2023, with the industry having sold nearly 590,000 units so far, reflecting a 3% increase from last year.

Proton, however, continues to lead in key SUV segments. The 2025 Proton X70, which was launched in August, recorded 1,466 units sold in September, making it the best-selling C-segment SUV for the month. This is the highest sales figure for the model since December 2022, nearly doubling its August numbers, indicating strong interest in the refreshed design and enhanced technology of the SUV.

Other Proton SUV models also performed well. The Proton X50, updated in June, sold 1,771 units, maintaining its dominance in the B-segment SUV category, a position it has held since its 2020 launch. Meanwhile, the Proton X90, Proton’s flagship model, reclaimed its top spot in the D-segment SUV category with 217 units sold, bringing its YTD total to 2,724 units.

Proton’s sedan range also continues to perform well. The Proton S70, the cumulative sales leader in the C-segment sedan category, added 1,013 units in September, pushing its total to 14,768 units in its first full year of sales. The Proton Saga, the company’s best-seller, achieved 5,162 sales, securing second place in the A-segment sedan market. The Proton Persona registered 1,295 sales, while the Proton Iriz recorded 345 units.

Roslan Abdullah, CEO of Proton Edar, acknowledged the challenges posed by the slower September sales but expressed confidence in Proton’s ability to increase its sales volume in the coming months. He highlighted the company’s refreshed SUV lineup and the introduction of a new sedan, which are expected to drive growth in the final quarter of the year. Proton is also planning a nationwide campaign to reward customers and will focus on improving the brand experience at dealerships and after-sales service. Additionally, the launch of Proton’s first electric vehicle in December is expected to further boost the company’s momentum.
