Huawei’s has unveiled what it labels a dual-optical path image-grade LiDAR system, claimed to increase resolution by four times to be the world’s highest specification 896-line system in mass production.

To put the words and numbers in context, the system is capable of identifying small objects as short as 14 cm from 120 m away, such as traffic cones and flat tyres, as reported by Car News China.

The system integrates two laser receiving units, each with a different focal length. One focuses on a wide-angle overview while the second one is on long distance objects. By combining both, the system is able to clearly capture small obstacles above the chassis and even low-reflectivity objects.

LiDAR functions by emitting a number of laser emission channels in a vertical direction, with each line corresponding to a beam. The more lines it has, the clearer the ‘image’ it forms, thus making it easier to identify other vehicles, pedestrians and objects.

The first models to be equipped with the new Huawei LiDAR will be the Maextro S800 and the Aito M9 that are part of HIMA (Harmony Intelligent Mobility Alliance), Huawei’s smart electric vehicle ecosystem with carmakers operating its HarmonyOS and Qiankun ADAS. Eventually, more Huawei-collaborated brands and models will incorporate the system as well.

In fact, non HIMA brands such as Avatr and Voyah, have also announced models equipped with the new LiDAR.
