As per Sportscar365, the request came at the behest of the Malaysian government that is looking to put on hold large-scale events deemed non-beneficial to national significance due to the potential fuel shortage.

Holding a large-scale motorsports event such as Super GT would lead to massive usage of fuel for transportation and spectators commuting to the circuit, among others.

If the reports are true, the Malaysian Super GT round joins the likes of the Bahrain and Saudi Arabian Formula 1 rounds in being cancelled due to the Middle East conflict.

The Malaysian Super GT round was scheduled for the 19-21 June 2026 weekend at the Sepang International Circuit. Not only would it have been the third round in the series, the Malaysian race would have also been the only round held outside of its native Japan.

It was only last year that the Autobacs Super GT series returned to Malaysia after a 12-year hiatus following its popular run from 2000 to 2013. Super GT has always held a phenomenal following in Malaysia, with the 2025 round recording 75,977 spectators, making it the second-largest attendance for the series’ 2025 calendar.
