Following an extensive facelift for its chief rival, the Mercedes-Benz S-Class, the four-year-old, seventh-generation limousine from Munich gets an extensive refresh to keep pace.

Like before, the 7 Series will be available in both plug-in hybrid and electric (i7) variants with an expected increase in price as well.

The majority of the enhancements are made to the EV, led by the new battery pack developed in partnership with Rimac Technology and is set to debut at Auto China in Beijing on 22 April 2026.

Rimac’s latest Gen6 cylindrical cells are designed to fit within the i7’s existing Gen5 module but bring a 20% increase in volumetric energy density over the previous Gen5 prismatic cells.

The new 112.5 kWh battery is an upgrade from the previous 105.7 kWh pack and shares the Gen6 cells with the new iX3 SUV and i3 sedan. Switching to the latest cells increases the range from 727 km, up from the outgoing 623 km.

Additionally, the i7 also houses the iX3’s more efficient electrically excited synchronous motors that contributes to the improved range. Furthermore, the maximum charging rate also increases from 195 kW to 250 kW.

There will be two dual-motor i7 variants comprising a 50 xDrive and M70 xDrive. The former will bring 449 PS and 599 Nm of torque while the latter shakes things up with 671 PS and 1,016 Nm of torque, delivering a century sprint in 3.8 seconds.

Nestled between the i7 and PHEV variants is the 740 xDrive with inline six combustion power in the form of 394 PS and 540 Nm of torque.

On the other hand, the two PHEV variants will be powered by BMW’s updated inline six petrol engine with a new turbocharger.

For the entry-level 750e xDrive, the figures are 482 PS and 700 N of torque while the more performance orientated M760e xDrive pounds the asphalt with 604 PS and 800 Nm oof torque, making for a slightly slower century sprint of only 4.2 seconds.

However, the PHEV variants still run on the same 18.7 kWh Gen5 battery pack with an unchanged 80 km of EV-only range.

Regardless of the 7 Series variant you choose, adaptive dampers and active rear steering will be standard.

Despite the supposed Neue Klasse design integration, the front looks similar but can be differentiated by sleeker headlights with embedded crystals, new air intakes and a new grille design with horizontal slats.

Things are much more apparent with the updated design language at the rear, better matching the i3. All variants will roll on 22-inch rims as standard.

Inside, things finally step up to match its key rivals with a 14.6-inch touchscreen for the front passenger, a BMW first, as is the availability of a two-tone finish. Nonetheless, the passenger’s touchscreen has been available in Audi and Mercedes-Benz luxury models for years.

The rest of the cabin adopts the Neue Klasse philosophy with the same 17.9-inch slanted central touchscreen and iX3’s steering wheel.

BMW’s new 43.3-inch Panoramic iDrive display now spans the top of the dashboard just above the driver’s eyeline and below the windscreen, negating the instrument cluster.

For the occupants that matter, those in the rear, BMW has kept the 31.3-inch 8K cinema screen that flips down and outputs via a 35-speaker Bowers & Wilkins sound system. Much of the rear cabin has seen a reduction in elements that could be distracting, keeping a clean and uncluttered design.

Lastly, all variants also get automatically opening doors, just like that offered by Rolls-Royce.
