Volkswagen Passenger Cars Malaysia (VPCM) has launched the new 2026 Volkswagen Golf R Mk8.5 in Malaysia. As before, the Golf R continues to be locally assembled (CKD) in Pekan, Pahang, and Malaysia remains the only country outside Germany to locally assemble the Golf R.
The new Golf R is priced at RM 337,790. With the optional Volkswagen Assurance Package (VAP), which includes five years of maintenance, five years of warranty and five years of roadside assistance, the price rises to RM 355,990.
Power still comes from the EA888 2.0-litre TSI turbocharged four-cylinder engine, but output has been increased to 333 PS and 420 Nm, from 320 PS and 400 Nm before.
Drive is sent to all four wheels through a 7-speed DSG dual-clutch transmission and Volkswagen’s 4Motion all-wheel drive system with R Performance Torque Vectoring. The new Golf R does 0-100 km/h in 4.6 seconds, down from 4.8 seconds previously, while top speed remains electronically limited to 250 km/h.
The Golf R also comes with Dynamic Chassis Control (DCC), sports suspension, progressive steering and XDS electronic differential lock. Drive modes include Comfort, Sport, Race, Drift and Individual.
On the outside, the Mk8.5 Golf R gets a sharper front end with revised lines and a more aggressive front bumper. The illuminated Volkswagen logo is now joined by light strips, while the headlights are IQ.Light LED matrix units with High Beam Plus.
At the rear, the Golf R gets new IQ.Light 3D LED taillights with a redesigned light signature, dynamic indicators and a roof spoiler. Carried over are the 19-inch Estoril alloy wheels and the Akrapovic R Performance titanium exhaust system with quad tailpipes.
Inside, the main update is the new 12.9-inch Media infotainment system, which runs Volkswagen’s latest MIB4 operating system. It replaces the previous 10-inch unit and is said to offer a faster and more responsive user interface.
Other interior equipment includes a 10-inch Digital Cockpit Pro instrument cluster, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, wireless smartphone charging, three-zone climate control, keyless entry and start, head-up display, and a 480W Harman Kardon sound system with nine speakers, a 12-channel amplifier and subwoofer.
Interior appointments include a black headliner, Carbon Grey trim, brushed stainless steel pedals, an R-specific leather-wrapped multifunction sports steering wheel and Nappa leather upholstery. The front seats also come with R logos, while heated and ventilated front seats are fitted as well.
For safety, the Golf R comes with Volkswagen’s IQ.Drive suite. This includes Adaptive Cruise Control with stop-and-go, Front Assist with autonomous emergency braking, Lane Assist, Side Assist, Emergency Assist and Travel Assist.
Other features include Park Distance Control with front and rear sensors, a rear-view camera, active occupant protection and hill start assist.
Available colours include the new Dolphin Grey, along with Lapiz Blue, Grenadilla Black and Pure White.
