Switching lanes in stop-and-go traffic might seem like a good idea, but experts advise against it. According to safety specialists from Tüv Thüringen, a German technical inspection agency, changing lanes does not save time and can increase the risk of accidents.
Drivers in traffic jams often get distracted, which means they may not notice someone switching lanes until too late, raising the likelihood of rear-end collisions.
A report by the German news agency DPA also highlights that frequent lane changes cause drivers behind to brake repeatedly, and crossing into the emergency lane can be dangerous.
Instead, experts recommend slowing down and maintaining a safe distance from the vehicle ahead. In normal conditions, the correct following distance is half your speed in metres (e.g., 50 metres at 100 km/h), and you can use guideposts for orientation.
Even at low speeds or in stop-and-go traffic, a safe distance must be kept. Depending on your speed, a gap of around three car lengths is suggested to allow for quick reactions in case of sudden stops.
Additionally, when approaching a traffic jam, drivers should activate their hazard lights and brake cautiously.
