Leo Chen added that this initiative aligns with Malaysia’s localization policies and will support the nation’s ambitions to become a regional hub for electric vehicles (EVs). Dato’ Jeffri Salim Davidson, CEO of Sime Darby Berhad, highlighted the partnership with Chery, underscoring Sime Darby’s commitment to sustainable mobility solutions and automotive assembly growth.

YB Liew Chin Tong, Deputy Minister of Investment, Trade, and Industry, applauded Chery for employing a Malaysian-majority workforce, aligning with Malaysia’s vision of better jobs and pay for locals. He noted that as of September 2024, Malaysia had 32,543 Battery Electric Vehicles (BEVs) registered, with most being imported as Completely Built-Up (CBU) units. With the line-off of the Omoda E5, Chery joins the ranks of brands assembling EVs locally, a crucial step in reducing Malaysia’s reliance on imports and promoting local manufacturing.
