MG Motor Malaysia recently announced plans to expand its line-up here and could the new MG 4X with its semi-solid state battery, that recently reached dealers in China, reach Malaysian shores soon as well?
This new 4X is different from the MG 4 currently sold in Malaysia. It is a higher-riding over the latter’s SUV body available here. Given that MG Malaysia’s announcement alluded towards no specific limitation on a particular powertrain or model, it could very well make its way here.
In China, there are two powertrains available. The base variant runs an electric motor in the rear axle with 168 PS. If you need more power, the flagship variant churns out 201 PS.
There are two battery variants, with the first being a liquid-solid manganese-based lithium-ion 53.9 kWh pack. MG claims the battery contains only 5% percent liquid electrolyte, hence the semi-solid state classification.

Semi-solid state batteries are intended to be deliver improved thermal stability with better performance in both extremely cold or hot conditions. More importantly, they are less susceptible to thermal runaway. On a CLTC cycle, the range is quoted as 510 km. The larger battery is a regular 64.2 kWh LFP supplied by CATL with 610 km of range under the CLTC cycle.
Inside, the cabin tech was co-developed with phone maker Oppo and includes the Navigate on Autopilot (NOA) function. This could also mean smartphone screen mirroring with Oppo devices and hopefully other Android devices as well.
With MITI’s recent requirements of CBU BEVs needing a minimum declared cost, insurance and freight (CIF) value of no less than RM 200,000 and a minimum power output of 180 kW (245 PS), this could be a good time for MG Malaysia to introduce local-assembly (CKD) for this new MG 4X.

The minimum CIF value of RM 200,00 will effectively see the final price with taxes and profit margins be closer to RM 300,000. This could wipe out the mid-range BEV segment.
MG Malaysia just revealed a key milestone in March with the MG S5 BEV CKD roll-out at the EP Manufacturing Berhad (EPMB) facility in Melaka, marking MG’s first locally assembled electric vehicle in Malaysia. This makes the brand one of the few already assembling BEVs in the country, placing it a prime position to CKD the new 4X as well.
Furthermore, the EPMB plant will be positioned as the brand’s regional manufacturing hub, with plans to export to South America, further strengthening the case for the 4X.
