Volkswagen Passenger Cars Malaysia (VPCM) appears to be preparing for the arrival of the new Volkswagen Tayron, the SUV that effectively replaces the Tiguan Allspace in several markets.
A teaser image posted by Volkswagen Malaysia shows the front and rear lighting signatures of the Tayron, accompanied by the line “Life is moving up a size. Tay tuned.” The wording is not exactly subtle, and strongly suggests that the new SUV is on its way to Malaysia.
No official launch date, pricing or Malaysian specifications have been announced yet, but the Tayron would slot into a familiar role in VPCM’s line-up as the successor to the Tiguan Allspace. Globally, the Tayron originally sat below the Touareg, although the Touareg is now reaching the end of its run, which would make the Tayron Volkswagen’s de facto large SUV offering in markets like Malaysia.
The Volkswagen Tayron sits on the MQB Evo platform and measures 4,792 mm long, 1,852 mm wide and 1,660 mm tall, with a wheelbase of 2,791 mm. That makes slightly bigger still than the outgoing Tiguan Allspace, being 66 mm longer and 13 mm wider, while the wheelbase is slightly longer as well.
Design-wise, the Tayron follows Volkswagen’s latest SUV design language. The front end features a full-width lighting treatment, an illuminated Volkswagen badge and a slim upper grille, while the lower grille gives it a broader, more upright stance.
Depending on variant and market, the Tayron can also be specified with IQ.Light HD matrix headlights. Volkswagen says each headlight uses 19,200 individually controllable multi-pixel LEDs, allowing functions such as glare-free high beam and a Lane Light function that projects a light carpet onto the road.
At the rear, the Tayron gets a full-width LED light bar and an illuminated Volkswagen badge, matching the theme seen on the front. The local teaser image shows both the front and rear light signatures clearly, which appear to be the main visual cue Volkswagen Malaysia is using ahead of the model’s local reveal.
Inside, the Tayron gets a cabin layout that is related to the latest Tiguan, but with its own dashboard treatment and a more spacious overall layout. Volkswagen says the model is available globally with five or seven seats, depending on variant and powertrain.
The dashboard features a 10.25-inch Digital Cockpit Pro instrument display as standard, along with a 12.9-inch infotainment touchscreen. Higher-spec versions can be equipped with a larger 15-inch Discover Pro Max infotainment system, together with a head-up display.
Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are available, while selected markets also get Volkswagen’s IDA voice assistant with ChatGPT integration. There is also a driving experience control knob on the centre console, which can be used to adjust functions such as drive modes, audio volume, all-wheel drive settings and ambient lighting themes.
Equipment available globally includes three-zone automatic air-conditioning, rear door sun blinds, a panoramic sunroof, Harman Kardon sound system, open-pore wood trim on Elegance models, ArtVelours Eco upholstery, and ergoActive Plus front seats with ventilation and massage functions.
The second row of seats can slide and recline, while seven-seat versions add two individual seats in the third row. In five-seat form, the Tayron offers up to 885 litres of luggage space behind the second row, expanding to 2,090 litres with the rear seats folded.
In seven-seat form, luggage space is listed at 345 litres with all three rows in use, 850 litres with the third row folded, and up to 1,905 litres with the second and third rows folded. That makes it a practical replacement for the Tiguan Allspace, especially for buyers who need occasional third-row seating.
In Europe, the Tayron is offered with a wide range of powertrains, including mild hybrid, plug-in hybrid, petrol and diesel options. The range includes a 1.5 eTSI mild hybrid with 150 PS, two eHybrid plug-in hybrid variants with 204 PS and 272 PS, as well as 2.0-litre TSI petrol and TDI diesel engines.
The plug-in hybrid versions use a 19.7 kWh net battery and are claimed to offer more than 100 km of electric-only range. They support AC charging at up to 11 kW and DC charging at up to 50 kW.
In Australia, the Tayron has been confirmed with three petrol engine options, including a 1.4-litre turbocharged engine with 150 PS and 250 Nm, as well as two 2.0-litre turbocharged variants with 204 PS and 265 PS. All are paired with a seven-speed DSG, with 4Motion all-wheel drive offered on the 2.0-litre variants.
Safety equipment on the global Tayron includes nine airbags, Front Assist autonomous emergency braking with pedestrian and cyclist monitoring, adaptive cruise control, Lane Assist, Side Assist, rear-view camera, Park Assist Plus and an exit warning system. Higher variants or option packages can also include Travel Assist and Park Assist Pro with memory and remote functions.
At present, Volkswagen Malaysia still lists the Tiguan Allspace R-Line on its official website. The current model is powered by a 2.0-litre TSI engine producing 220 PS and 350 Nm, paired with a 7-speed DSG and 4Motion all-wheel drive. It is listed at RM 260,074 on-the-road excluding insurance with the Volkswagen Assurance Package.
