Toyota has announced its return to Formula 1 as the official technical partner of the Haas F1 Team. This partnership comes as Toyota seeks to re-engage with grand prix racing, enticed by the upcoming 2026 chassis regulations, although there are no plans to become a power unit manufacturer for the new engine framework. Toyota previously competed in F1 from 2002 to 2009 but withdrew after failing to secure a race win amid the global financial crisis.
Since its departure from F1, Toyota has thrived in other motorsport disciplines. It achieved notable success in the World Endurance Championship with five consecutive wins at the 24 Hours of Le Mans from 2018 to 2022. Additionally, Toyota’s World Rally Championship team has dominated since its return in 2016, winning every drivers’ title since 2019, including the last two for Kalle Rovenpera.
Haas F1 Team principal Ayao Komatsu expressed his excitement about the collaboration, emphasising the advantages of working with a global leader in the automotive sector. He highlighted how this partnership would allow Haas to tap into Toyota’s resources and expertise, enhancing their competitiveness in F1 while providing a platform for Toyota to develop its engineering capabilities.
Komatsu acknowledged the support of Ferrari, noting that team principal Fred Vasseur was informed about the partnership and is fully supportive, particularly following the recent renewal of their technical partnership. He also expressed gratitude to key figures at Toyota, including Akio Toyoda (chairman), Tomoya Takahashi (president), and Masaya Kaji (project manager) for their involvement in this new venture.
