Geely’s Galaxy Park booth at the ongoing Auto China 2026 show has all the usual flashy displays and new models but the most interesting one sat a little beyond the spotlight, an all-electric (BEV) variant of the Geely Galaxy Starship 7, the very same model the Proton eMas 7 PHEV is based on. While in Malaysia the eMas 7 BEV and PHEV variants where the same badge, they are based on different models. The PHEV is based on the larger Galaxy Starship 7 while the BEV variant comes from the Geely Galaxy E5.
This asks a question that was never previously brought up, why a BEV variant of the Starship 7?
The answer is in the battery, specifically Geely’s Shendun Golden Battery Family.
This is Geely’s Shendun Gold Brick battery, a newer pack that is touted to be safer, more durable and offers improved performance.
Geely claims the pack chargers quicker, has better energy density and last over 6,000 charge cycles with over 95% efficiency.
Currently, the eMas 7 BEV sold here runs on Geely’s Aegis Short Blade LFP battery while the eMas 7 PHEV uses a smaller LFP pack.
If the Galaxy Starship 7 does eventually go into production, Geely will have two BEV SUVs that are close in size but with different powertrain technology. It is unlikely that Proton would offer both variants here if that were the case, as the more reasonable outcome will be the eMas 7 BEV being facelifted with the Galaxy Starship 7 and its newer battery.
Geely takes the battery’s safety seriously, evident by the pack on display that has undergone extreme compression, bullet penetration and multi-point puncture testing.
The compression test was carried out at 25 degrees Celsius under a pressure of 150 kN, or roughly eight to ten average-sized family cars stacked on top of one another over a radius of 75 mm. This is to simulate an accident scenario that could cause the battery to succumb to thermal runaway.
As for the puncture test, multiple needles were used and penetrated the pack at a speed of 25 mm per second. Following that, the needles were left inside and the battery observed for an hour to record voltage and temperature.
Battery penetration, especially during an accident, is the most likely cause of damage that could lead to a short circuit and subsequently, thermal runaway.
Should this new battery enter production, it will possibly find its way into the eMas 7 BEV, either as an upgrade for the battery or to replace the model altogether with a larger body.
