BYD has marked another major milestone in its rapid rise as a global electric vehicle powerhouse, announcing the production of its 15 millionth new energy vehicle, covering both battery-electric and plug-in hybrid models across its brands. The achievement highlights the pace at which the Chinese carmaker has expanded its electrified portfolio and scaled up manufacturing
Founded in 1995 and entering the automotive sector in 2003, BYD’s growth in new energy vehicles has gathered speed in recent years. The company crossed the 10 million mark in late 2024 and reached 13 million by mid-2025, just eight months later, underscoring how sharply production has accelerated. Reaching 15 million cumulative units further cements BYD’s position among the world’s largest producers of electrified vehicles.
In cumulative terms, BYD’s total NEV output now surpasses that of several major international automakers. Tesla’s global production stands at about 8.1 million battery-electric vehicles, while Volkswagen Group’s combined output of BEVs and PHEVs remains below three million units. BYD’s figures include both fully electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles, reflecting its broader electrification strategy and placing it firmly at the top tier of global NEV manufacturers.
The milestone has been driven by strong demand for a number of high-volume models. The Dolphin hatchback and the Seagull, also known in some markets as the Dolphin Mini or Atto 1, have each passed the one-million-unit sales mark. SUVs such as the Song Plus and Sealion 06 have also played a key role, while Dynasty series models including the Qin, Song and Tang continue to contribute heavily to both domestic sales and exports.
Behind the numbers is BYD’s focus on tightly integrating core technologies across its range, from battery systems and electric powertrains to intelligent driving solutions. The company made a decisive shift in 2022 when it ended production of pure internal combustion engine vehicles, committing fully to electrified drivetrains and accelerating development across its NEV lineup.
The 15 millionth vehicle represents a significant contribution to global electric vehicle output at a time when China accounts for a substantial share of worldwide NEV production. BYD’s cumulative figures alone make up a notable portion of that total, reflecting not just scale but also the speed at which the company continues to grow. As production momentum builds, BYD’s expanding footprint underlines how central it has become to the global transition towards electrified mobility.
